A lecture series has started at SPbGASU as part of project “Digital Revival of Architectural Heritage Sites of the Leningrad Region”: with the participation of the corporate department of the Committee for State Control, Use, and Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments of the Government of Saint Petersburg (KGIOP), a lecture was held on the topic “Fundamentals of Protection of Cultural Heritage Sites.”

The first speaker was the chairman of KGIOP Aleksey Mikhailov – Candidate of Architecture, member of the Russian National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

The Vice-Rector for Continuing Education of SPbGASU delivered a welcoming speech to the project participants Victoria Vinogradova, which highlighted the importance of such educational events for both the university and the industry.

The lecture by the chairman of the KGIOP was dedicated to the system of protection of cultural heritage sites, the history of its emergence in Russia and worldwide. In addition, the attendees learned about competitions and other events that the committee conducts to develop the field of restoration of cultural heritage sites.

Aleksey Mikhailov paid special attention to the educational and outreach project “Code of Saint Petersburg,” created with the support of KGIOP. The project is dedicated to the unique architectural, natural, and spatial features of the historic center of Saint Petersburg as the first Russian site included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The lecture was attended by more than 150 students and faculty members of SPbGASU, as well as students of the Saint Petersburg Architectural and Construction College.

“Undoubtedly, a vast layer of culture and a person’s perception of the world are encapsulated in architecture. Architecture reflects both a certain period in human history and the individual’s sense of their place in the world, as well as the way a person perceives these architectural objects. Therefore, it is important to preserve the object so that it can ‘live’ for many more years while retaining all the layers of time,” noted Aleksey Mikhaylov.

At the end of the lecture, there was a “question and answer” session where the attendees were able to discuss their questions in more detail.

In the future, participants of the project “Digital Revival of Architectural Heritage Sites of the Leningrad Region” can expect regular lectures from representatives of educational and scientific organizations, the professional restoration community, and developers of domestic engineering solutions.
