UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk expressed deep concern over a series of Houthi attacks on airports in Saudi Arabia carried out in recent days. According to him, these attacks resulted in the deaths and injuries of dozens of Saudi citizens and foreigners. Türk was particularly outraged by yesterday’s attack on Riyadh’s main airport, which he called “monstrous.”

Türk reminded that international humanitarian law unequivocally prohibits attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure. He emphasized that these attacks, like other alleged violations by the parties to the conflict, must be thoroughly investigated, and the perpetrators held accountable.

According to the High Commissioner, the catastrophic consequences of the conflict for the civilian population—both in Yemen and in Saudi Arabia—indicate that continuing the hostilities will only exacerbate the suffering and will not lead to a resolution of the conflict. He reminded the parties of their obligation to take measures to protect civilians and called on them to immediately de-escalate.
