Sergey Sobyanin opened the Shelepikhinskaya embankment after the completion of reconstruction.

“Over the past three years, we have reconstructed seven sections of the Moscow embankments in the ‘Bolshoy City’ area: on both the right and left banks of the river. Today, we have completed the reconstruction of the Shelepikhinskaya embankment along its entire length. These were mostly depressed areas, some of which were industrial zones. Today, these are comfortable public spaces accessible for cars, relaxation, and sports activities for Muscovites. So I congratulate the residents, those who work nearby, and those who stroll here — it’s a completely different situation. We will continue working further. Opposite, we are currently working on the embankment near the ‘Masterclass of Peter Fomenko’ theater — there will be another section of the Moscow embankment,” noted the Mayor of Moscow at the opening of the new public space.

Shelepikhinskaya Embankment, located on the left bank of the Moscow River, adjoins the capital’s largest business center, Moscow-City. However, for decades it was mainly used as an access road to the industrial zone and sparse residential development.

As the comprehensive development and improvement of the former industrial area progressed, a need arose to carry out reconstruction work on the Shelepikhinskaya embankment in accordance with the high-quality standards for the urban environment adopted in Moscow.

The renovation project, whose implementation was largely completed in September 2026, involved the construction of a new section of the Shelepikhinskaya Embankment from the Akademik Korolev Bridge to the junction with the Karamyshevskaya Embankment near the 3rd Silicate Passage.

“The section was expanded to two lanes in each direction, new traffic lights and stops for surface city transport were installed, pedestrian crossings and parking spaces were arranged. In total, 3.2 kilometers of roads were built and reconstructed,” the Mayor of Moscow wrote on his channel on

in the messenger “Max”.

Taking into account the previously constructed section of the embankment from the Belorussky Bridge to the Third Ring Road (TTK), a through passage along the Moscow River embankments will be arranged from the TTK to the Zhivopisny Bridge, with a total length of about seven kilometers and exits to Bagration Avenue, Shelepikhinsky Bridge, the North-Western Chord, and Marshal Zhukov Avenue.

To make it convenient for passengers to get to the new Zvenigorodskaya station of the Rublyovo-Arkhangelskaya metro line, two surface transport routes — M31 and No. 374 — will be organized along the renovated Shelepikhinskaya embankment.

In particular, route M31 will be extended from the Moscow International Business Center (MIBC) “Moscow-City” to the Karamyshevsky pier. Route No. 374 will now run from 1st Silicate Passage to public service center Khoroshevo-Mnevniki district.

According to expert estimates, more than 34 thousand vehicles will pass daily along the Shelepikhinskaya Embankment.

A comfortable walk from the embankment to the Zvenigorodskaya metro station takes from six to ten minutes. Moreover, with the completion of the reconstruction of the Shelepikhinskaya embankment, it has become much more convenient to use the pier for the regular river electric transport Heart of the Capital.

For residents of the new residential complexes located on Shelepikhinskaya Embankment, travel time by car to the Moscow International Business Center “Moscow-City” has been reduced by more than half — from 10 to four minutes.

The load on the sections of Bolshaya Filevskaya Street (from Minskaya Street to the Third Transport Ring), Zvenigorodskoye Highway (from the North-Western chord to the Third Transport Ring), and the Third Transport Ring (from Shmitovsky Drive to Zvenigorodskoye Highway) has decreased by 10 percent.

An important part of the project was the creation of a new public space — a recreational zone along the Moscow River about two kilometers long, stretching from the Academician Korolev Bridge to the Third Transport Ring (TTK). It is suitable for walking, sports activities, and relaxation. The total length of pedestrian and bicycle paths along the embankment is four kilometers. A sports ground and two children’s playgrounds have also been arranged, and 33 hectares of lawn have been planted. In addition, the riverbank slope was reinforced: to prevent landslides and soil erosion, retaining walls totaling two kilometers in length were constructed.

“The immediate plans include completing the reconstruction of Prichalny Passage, which connects Shelepikhinskaya Embankment with the highway of the same name,” wrote the Mayor of Moscow.

Improvement of the Moscow River Embankments

The total length of the Moscow River’s shoreline within the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) is almost 200 kilometers.

Until quite recently, most of Moscow’s embankments did not meet modern standards of accessibility and comfort. The central granite embankments were mainly used as roads for cars and were inconvenient for pedestrians. A significant part of the Moscow River shoreline was closed to residents due to the industrial zones located there.

Due to infrastructure wear, the few pedestrian embankments were practically unused. A significant part of the coastal areas, especially in the lower reaches of the river, were ordinary undeveloped banks. The return of embankments to Muscovites is one of the most important improvement programs implemented by the Moscow Government in recent years. Since 2011, about 110 kilometers of embankments have been renovated, including almost all the historic granite ones in the city center. Comfortable pedestrian spaces, areas for relaxation and sports, and viewing platforms have appeared on them. Sidewalks have been widened and renovated, some have been equipped with bike-pedestrian paths, and thousands of trees and shrubs have been planted.

Thus, today a significant part of the Moscow River’s shoreline meets modern standards of accessibility and comfort.

Among other things, in 2025, after landscaping, a pedestrian embankment of the Moscow River was opened in the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve — a unique promenade 3.5 kilometers long. The Pushkinskaya Embankment in Gorky Park — from the Krymsky Bridge to the Andreevsky — has been transformed and has become a comfortable place for Muscovites and tourists to relax.

Six embankments on the right bank of the Moscow River have been renovated — from the Garden Ring to Nagatinsky Zaton: Shlyuzovaya, Derbenevskaya, Paveletskaya, Danilovskaya, Novodanilovskaya, and Nagatinskaya, with a total length of 11.4 kilometers.

In 2026, a new embankment 825 meters long was opened in the capital on the right bank of the Moscow River between the Shelepikhinsky and Belorussky bridges. In addition, new sections of the Krutitskaya and Simonovskaya embankments with a total length of 2.2 kilometers were put into operation, along with the reconstructed Shelepikhinskaya embankment 3.2 kilometers long.

Plans for the coming years include the reconstruction of several sections of the Moscow River embankments. In particular, it is planned to renovate the section from Filevsky Park (Sail Bridge) to the ‘Peter Fomenko Workshop’ theatre, Karamyshevskaya Embankment, the Mark Chagall Embankment from the Vesnin Brothers Boulevard to Projected Passage No. 4062 (including the Novinki backwater), as well as the embankments of the Mnevnikovskaya floodplain. In addition, landscaping is planned for the section from the Kolomenskoye museum-reserve to the Brateevsky cascade park and a section of the embankment in the Nagatinskaya floodplain.

In 2024, more than 20 kilometers of granite embankments of Moscow’s second largest river, the Yauza, were renovated. As a result, a unified convenient pedestrian route was created from the high-rise building on Kotelnicheskaya Embankment to Veterans Avenue in the eastern part of the capital.
