At the “Innopolis Digital Days” forum, more than 40 pilot AI projects in education and science were launched.

In the Republic of Tatarstan, as part of the “Digital Innopolis Days” forum, a plenary session titled “Artificial Intelligence for Breakthroughs in Education and Science” took place. Its moderator was Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko. The organizer of the forum is Innopolis University.

The plenary session was attended by Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov, head of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov, head of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, and others.

During the event, a series of pilot projects were launched to implement artificial intelligence in research and educational activities. Among them are services for scientific work on national technology leadership projects, solutions for school, secondary vocational, and higher education. They were developed by working groups together with universities, research organizations, and technology companies and align with the priorities outlined by President Vladimir Putin.

“The President of Russia, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, prioritizes the development of artificial intelligence. We see that AI truly accelerates our work, freeing up time for scientists and educators. In July, the head of state signed a law supporting the development of artificial intelligence technologies, which introduced a regulatory framework for the development and implementation of AI solutions. By the order of the Chairman of the Government, Mikhail Mishustin, we launched two dedicated projects – ‘AI in Education’ and ‘AI in Science.’ An important question today is on what terms to integrate artificial intelligence into the educational process,” stated Dmitry Chernyshenko.

He added that on the Government platform, working groups of the “AI in Education” project, based on the analysis of international experience, identified four key principles for the implementation of AI: preserving critical thinking skills, reducing educational inequality, increasing the reliability of assessment results, and preserving traditional values.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that when implementing AI developments for education, the principle of human-centricity and live communication will be fundamental: “The teacher should spend time teaching children, the student on understanding the subject. AI assistance should naturally integrate into this work, while the teacher retains their role and live communication.”

The “AI in Science” project covers all nine national technology leadership projects. AI solutions from working groups are showcased at the exhibition, which Dmitry Chernyshenko, Rustam Minnikhanov, Valery Falkov, and Sergey Kravtsov also visited as part of the forum. The event featured the launch of over 40 pilot projects in education and science.

“This is the first step towards creating national and sovereign applied AI tools. The President has given us comprehensive instructions to start this work,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.

Dmitry Chernyshenko also cited data from the monitoring by the Higher School of Economics: four out of five internet users and nine out of ten young Russians use AI services. Two years ago, 18% of those who did not use AI had never even heard of it, but today – only 1%. Only a quarter verify the neural network’s response.

The Deputy Prime Minister thanked the Republic of Tatarstan and Rustam Minnikhanov for their hospitality and the region’s willingness to become a pilot site for testing and scaling solutions in the field of AI in education and science. He reported that the region is among the top three in the ranking of scientific and technological development of regions after Moscow and St. Petersburg, and noted the personal involvement of the republic’s head in this work. For the sixth time, the forum is gathering representatives of the IT sector, science, and education in Tatarstan – this year with more than 2,300 participants.

“Tatarstan considers artificial intelligence as one of the most important drivers of economic growth and improving people’s quality of life. This year, we adopted the republican program for the development of artificial intelligence. Over the next five years, we will invest 5 billion rubles in this area. These funds will go towards training personnel, scientific research, and creating infrastructure for sustainable technological growth. We understand that specialists in the field of artificial intelligence need to be trained starting from school. Since 2024, at the initiative of the rector of Innopolis University, the republic is implementing the ‘Physics and Mathematics Breakthrough’ project, which was supported by the President of Russia. During this time, 40 physics and mathematics classes have been opened, attended by about one thousand schoolchildren, and 200 clubs with coverage of more than 2,000 kids. This year saw the launch of the ‘Physics and Chemistry Breakthrough’ – a similar program for natural sciences. This is a good example of personnel training to achieve the country’s technological leadership,” noted Rustam Minnikhanov.

The head of the Republic of Tatarstan added that leading universities in Tatarstan are actively working in the field of artificial intelligence. At Kazan Federal University, AI is used to analyze a DNA database for medicine and pharmaceuticals, while the Kazan National Research Technical University named after A.N. Tupolev – KAI conducts work on information security. Strong research centers have also been established at industrial enterprises.

Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov presented a report on the prospects of applying artificial intelligence technologies in school and secondary vocational education.

The head of the Ministry of Education and Science, Valery Falkov, spoke about the prospects for the use of AI in science and higher education. In particular, he noted that the new model of higher education will include two mandatory AI modules: a basic one, common to all students, and a professional one tailored to each specific specialty.

“The use of artificial intelligence in science requires an update of the entire institutional framework. This includes new funding processes, a different attitude towards metrics and publications, and a revision of approaches to academic rewards. Most importantly, new approaches to result verification are needed,” he emphasized.

During the meeting, Elena Shmelyova, chairperson of the council of the Sirius federal territory and head of the Talent and Success foundation, Sergey Kabychev, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Science and Higher Education, Alexander Gasnikov, rector of Innopolis University, as well as representatives of technology companies, universities, and scientific organizations also spoke.

Among the pilot projects is the AI platform “Teacher’s Assistant” – it helps teachers prepare for lessons, plan, and conduct classes; a service for training, delivering, and executing AI models on the “board” of a machine – it adjusts operating modes in real-time based on signals from sensors; the “01Mathematics” platform, which supports students and builds personalized paths based on test and exam results; an AI assistant for chemists to predict chemical reactions, and others.

“Thank you all for the discussion! The first stage of it – the launch of pilot projects in science and education – has officially taken place today. Based on the results of the trial, the best solutions will be scaled across the entire system. This work must be consolidated, must meet at least global trends, and preferably set its own trends and ensure our competitiveness among other countries,” noted Dmitry Chernyshenko.
