In the A.S. Pushkin library-reading room, subordinate to the capital Department of Culture, starting from October 11, a new authorial series of literary talks ‘In the Sights of the Lorgnette’ will begin. It will be hosted by Anastasia Frolkina, a member of the Union of Writers of Russia.
Popular science lectures dedicated to cultural and historical phenomena of the 19th century, as well as thematic public talks, have been held at the library since 2025. The new cycle of meeting-interviews is based on reflecting on the material history of the 19th century. One of the main topics will be the influence of the Victorian era on art, since many ideas popular today, including those about literature, were formulated back in the times of industrialization, the development of science and technology, great achievements and discoveries.
The guests of the conversations will be authors writing in various genres and on different topics — from historical novels to fantasy. In the format of a live dialogue, the writers will present their books and share what became the source of inspiration during their creation, as well as analyze their own texts to find traces and influences of the Victorian Era in the plot twists.
The first meeting of the series “Under the Spyglass: The British Lion, the Indian Tiger” will be dedicated to India and its connections with European culture, particularly with Great Britain. Their relationship has traveled a complex path from colonial domination to mutual penetration of the two cultures. Anastasia Frolkina and Yulia Kashtanova, a writer, poet, and singer, will discuss this and much more at the first meeting.
