An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

There are places where you arrive for an hour but end up staying all day. VDNKh and its surroundings are one of those. If you take a step to the side from the main gates, you get a whole journey: with space, bees, birch bark manuscripts, and capybaras. We share an option for a weekend route.

S.P. Korolev House-Museum: Space in the Living Room

Every Muscovite knows the Museum of Cosmonautics. Under the titanium monument “To the Conquerors of Space” lies a collection of the history of victories, records, and labor—from the first satellites to the modern orbital stations that amaze anew every time. But on weekends, we suggest visiting a quiet place near the monument — at S.P. Korolev Memorial House-Museum.

Here the founder of practical astronautics spent his last years, and the museum, like a time machine, preserves the atmosphere of the genius’s life. The museum has about 19,000 items — letters, documents, photographs, personal belongings. Through them, you will see the path of domestic astronautics through the eyes of a man who not only dreamed of it but also brought it to life.

“Capybaraboom”: in the “Moskvarium” not only fish?

“Moskvarium” is a real ocean under a roof: fish, sharks, underwater tunnels. But that’s not all — we recommend checking out the unique themed game space, dedicated to cute capybaras.

Every visitor can learn about the life and habits of this South American rodent. The space is divided into seven halls with interactive zones suitable for any age. An ideal place for those who need a break after the workweek and a good mood.

“Biocluster”: a must-visit

“Biocluster” The K.A. Timiryazev State Biological Museum — one of the most prominent scientific museum projects Moscow. If you haven’t been there yet, the upcoming weekend is a good opportunity to catch up.

Pavilion No. 28 “Beekeeping”, exhibition “Buzzing World”. The exhibition was designed so that entomology — the science of insects — becomes understandable to the broadest audience. You will learn how important insects are to the planet, get acquainted with their lives, and with the help of multimedia stands, see the world through their eyes. Here you can attend tours, workshops, and interactive programs — neither children nor adults will be bored.

Pavilion No. 31 “Geology”, exhibition “12 Signs of Life”. The exhibition tells how scientists and artists explore the connection of all living things on Earth and beyond: it features skeletons, taxidermy, animal nests, minerals, models of fruits, and contemporary art objects. Science and art stand side by side, trying to answer one question — what unites us all?

“Space Paleontology.” If you love space and find yourself in Pavilion No. 31 “Geology” on Sunday, October 11, drop by the lecture-tour “Space Paleontology: Where to Look for Traces of Life Beyond Earth”. Participants will learn how scientists study the oldest evidence of life on Earth, recreate the conditions of the early planet, and search for similar scenarios in the Solar System.

“Slovo” Museum: a weekend for the humanities

After the natural sciences, we recommend paying attention to the Museum of Slavic Writing “Slovo”. It is dedicated to the past, present, and future of Cyrillic. On the overview tour, you will see ancient graffiti, birch bark manuscripts, a zemstvo school classroom, learn about folklore, and possibly rethink your perception of the Russian language.

Gorky Film Studio: behind the scenes of big cinema

Movie enthusiasts have a habit of looking behind the scenes. Just 15–20 minutes from VDNH is the Gorky Film Studio, where a combined tour was created “Journey into the World of Cinema”. You will walk through the corridors where your beloved childhood films were born, learn the history of the film studio, see filming equipment from past years, and costumes from fairy tale films such as “Morozko,” “Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors,” “Finist the Bright Falcon,” and “After the Rain on Thursday.”
