In the project “Active Citizen» began voting, whose participants will choose a name for the steppe eagle chick from Moscow Zoo, subordinate to the capital’s Department of Culture.
In May, a pair of steppe eagles, which have been living for several years in the “Birds of Prey Rock” exhibit, had a chick. It was the first for the 17-year-old female and the 18-year-old male after moving to a new aviary. These birds are found in our country, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China, and they are listed in the Red Book of Russia as a rare species and internationally as endangered.
Experts note that steppe eagles form a pair once and for life. For raising offspring, the birds of prey chose the most secluded spot — a niche at a height in the far corner of the aviary. While the female incubated the clutch for about 45 days, the male provided her with food all that time. Today the chick has already grown and is getting used to visitors. It only lacks one thing — an expressive name.
In voting Participants of the “Active Citizen” project are invited to choose a name for the steppe eagle from seven options. The chick’s gender will be revealed later, so all names are unisex.
All options refer to places where eagles can be found. The first is Sarmat, named after the ancient nomadic people who lived in the steppes. The second option is Yergeni, named after the highland in the southeast of the Russian Plain. The bird may also be named Oren — a short form of the Orenburg region, where these birds live. Another option is Sal, named after the steppe river flowing through Rostov region and Kalmykia. The name Baskunchak is also suggested, after the salt lake in Astrakhan region. The chick may be named Kulunda, in honor of the Kulunda steppe in southern Western Siberia, or Aley, after a river in the Altai Krai. Participants also have the opportunity to propose their own answer option.
Users with full and standard accounts can participate in choosing a name for the eagle account on the mos.ru portal. Voting will earn points in the city loyalty program “Million Prizes.” They can be used to receive goods and services from program partner organizations, to top up the balance of the “Troika” card, as well as to be directed to charity. Options for using the points are presented on the website showcase ag-vmeste.ru.
This is not the first vote in which the residents of the capital help choose names for the inhabitants of the Moscow Zoo and its branches. Thanks to the “Active Citizen” project, Muscovites have already given names to Katya during the pandemic, the Amur tiger, to the weeping capuchin Norman, female Andean condor of Patagonia, to beaver Innocent and many other animals.
Project “Active Citizen” has been operating since 2014. During this time, over seven million people have joined it, and more than 7,900 votes have taken place. Every month, between 30 and 40 decisions are implemented in the city. The project is developed by the State Public Institution “New Management Technologies” and the city Department of Information Technology.
The creation, development, and operation of e-government infrastructure, including the provision of mass socially significant services, as well as other services and electronic form services, correspond to the goals of the national project “Data Economy and Digital Transformation of the State” and the regional project of the city of Moscow “Digital Public Administration.” More information about Russia’s national projects and the capital’s contribution can be found on a special page.
A large-scale project is presented on the portal mos.ru special project, dedicated to the development of key areas of Moscow.
