Main news of the day at the UN and worldwide: the third anniversary of Hamas attacks on Israel, ongoing Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities, escalation in Yemen and Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, situation in Irkutsk region after the death of an employee of the plague control institute.
Anniversary of Hamas attacks on Israel
Three years ago, as a result of “monstrous attacks” by Hamas and other armed groups, civilians in Israel were killed and taken hostage. This was recalled today by UN Deputy Special Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher. According to him, the subsequent devastating Israeli strikes on Gaza resulted in civilian deaths and forced displacement. Fletcher once again called on Israel and Hamas to fully implement the ceasefire agreement, protect civilians, remove all obstacles to aid delivery, respect international law, and choose lasting peace.
Strikes on Ukrainian cities
The UN Secretary-General condemned the ongoing Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities. According to available data, they are causing a record number of civilian casualties and inflicting serious damage on civil infrastructure. António Guterres is also concerned about the increasing number of civilian victims resulting from Ukrainian armed forces’ strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation, including recent attacks in the Moscow region. Any strikes on civilians and infrastructure violate international humanitarian law and must be immediately stopped, the Secretary-General stressed.
Escalation Around Yemen
The UN has once again condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including recent assaults in Jizan and Najran, as well as strikes near Riyadh. The Organization is deeply concerned about the ongoing escalation in Yemen and its surroundings. The UN calls on all parties to exercise restraint and comply with their obligations under international law. Civilians in Yemen continue to flee conflict areas. According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 184,000 people have left their homes since August 1, including over 21,000 in the past week. The UN and partners have provided assistance to more than 126,000 people.
Situation in the Irkutsk Region
The World Health Organization (WHO) is actively monitoring the situation following the report of the death of an employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute, who died on October 2 after being hospitalized with severe pneumonia. This was announced on Wednesday by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. According to the initial media reports, it was assumed that infection with plague might have occurred as a result of a laboratory incident. According to the WHO chief, in response to an official request, the Russian authorities reported that no cases of plague have been registered in the Irkutsk region.
