“Chuysky Trakt”, Altai Republic

In the Altai Republic, nearly 20 kilometers of road surface on the federal highway R-256 “Chuysky Trakt” have been brought to standard condition this year by the Federal Road Agency (Rosavtodor). Some of the work has been completed ahead of schedule. Currently, road workers have begun repairs planned for 2027. This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.

“The ‘Chuya Highway’ is essentially the main transport artery connecting the Altai Republic with the rest of Russia, as well as with Mongolia and China. At the same time, the route forms the foundation for the development of domestic tourism: it leads to key points of tourist demand and is itself an attraction, passing through scenic mountain passes, steppes, rivers, and rocks. Where tourism and logistics directly impact people’s quality of life and the economy, it is extremely important to keep the roads in good condition. This is a matter of safety, accessibility, and regional development. This road season, not only were the planned volumes completed here, but progress also got ahead: almost 20 km of pavement was renewed, and work on 2027 projects started earlier than scheduled. This advance allows for maintaining the road in regulatory condition without slowing down,” noted Marat Khusnullin.

Sections of the main route from the 439th to the 444th km near the village of Maima and from the 560th to the 570th km at the exit from Shebalino have been restored to regulatory condition, as well as a four-kilometer approach to Gorno-Altaysk completed a year ahead of schedule. In total, on nearly a 20-kilometer stretch of the route, pavement defects have been eliminated, the top layers of asphalt concrete have been renewed, horizontal markings have been applied, and repair grading of the shoulders has been performed.

Currently, similar works planned for next year are being carried out on sections from the 455th to the 472nd km (passing through Souzga, Cheremshanka, and Manzherok) and from the 479th to the 495th km (near the settlements of Izvestkovy, Ust-Muny, and Barangol). Thus, by the end of 2026, it is planned to renew the road surface on a total of another 16 km of the popular tourist route of the Altai Mountains.

Also, repair work continues in the republic on the access road to Lake Teleckoe, which became part of the R-256 route in 2020. At the end of August this year, a renovated section from the 122nd to the 133rd km was commissioned here, as well as bridges over the rivers Pervaya Uba and Vyselskaya Uba. The main structural elements on the facilities were dismantled and completely replaced: supports and spans, barrier fencing, and the drivable surface with asphalt concrete covering. To protect against seasonal floods, the earth bed on the approaches was reinforced with Reno mattresses, and the drainage system was also updated.

Complex repairs with partial soil replacement are being carried out by specialists on sections from the 89th to the 102nd km and from the 106th to the 115th km of the Chuysky Tract, and a major repair project is being implemented on the bridge over the Uba River (57th km). On the section from the 41st to the 60th km of the route in the Choysky district, the pavement is being restored on local sections with heaving and weak soils, defects in the pavement are being eliminated, and arrangement elements are being updated. The specified repair works, including the major repair of the bridge over the Uba River, are planned to be completed by the end of 2026.
