Beirut, April 16 /Xin Hua/ — The Presidents of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, and the United States, Donald Trump, held a telephone conversation on Thursday, during which they discussed the development of the situation in Lebanon and the region. This was reported by the local TV channel “Al-Jadid” citing a statement from the office of the Lebanese leader.
As stated in the statement, during the negotiations, Mr. Aoun outlined the official position of the Lebanese government, thanked D. Trump for his efforts to assist in the cessation of fire in Lebanon, and called on him to continue his efforts to ensure the earliest possible cessation of fire.
D. Trump, in response, stated that he will try to satisfy Lebanon’s request for a ceasefire as soon as possible, and informed J. Aoun that a decision on the possibility of approving a truce in Lebanon will be made in the near hours.
The statement notes that G. Aoun had previously refused to enter into negotiations with the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Israeli newspaper “Haaretz” reported on Thursday that the Israeli army has instructed troops on the ground to prepare for a possible ceasefire in Lebanon, which could take effect this evening.
