With the arrival of spring and positive temperatures in the Moscow Zoo, which is subordinate to the capital cityDepartment of Culture, animals that stayed in the closed pavilion during the winter went out for a walk. To see them, it is enough to purchase tickets through the service“Mosbilet”.
One of the first street aviaries on the new territory was inhabited by birds. The feathered creatures are released in the morning and daytime, when the sun warms the ground to plus 5–10 degrees. Visitors can observe cranes, black storks, crowned cranes, saddle-billed storks, black-necked cranes, and marabou storks.
“Bringing heat-loving animals outside is always an important stage, marking the arrival of true spring at the zoo. We try to make this transition as comfortable as possible, taking into account the individual characteristics of each species. It is especially touching to observe the young inhabitants. For example, the little capybaras, born in the autumn, went out for a walk for the first time and curiously became acquainted with the snow. And the male plains gorilla Vizuri, like a true leader, was the first to take his family out for exercise, setting an example even for the youngest, Kwito.”We invite Muscovites and guests of the capital to stroll through the territory of the zoo and observe the lives of our inhabitants in the outdoor enclosures. In addition, many of our wards can be followed online on the website zoo.mos.ru,” said Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo.
At the end of March, curly and pink pelicans, as well as cormorants, were relocated to an outdoor pond in a new area. They spent the cold season in the “Birds and Butterflies” pavilion.
Among the mammals on the outdoor grounds were lowland gorillas. Visitors saw the male Vizuri and the female Kiru, as well as the baby Kwito. Now the zoologists have begun adding adult food to his diet: greens, branch fodder, fresh vegetables, dairy products, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits.
On the old territory, you can observe the largest rodents in the world that inhabit South America — the family of capybaras. These are semi-aquatic pigs for whom bodies of water are important. In the warm season, they bathe in the outdoor enclosure. The first to appear is little Simka, who was born last autumn. Following her, on the outdoor territory, comes her sister Verta.
Gigantic anteaters Diego and Bella, who live next to the capybaras, are also taken for walks.
Baby capybaras have appeared in the Moscow Zoo
In April and May, with the onset of stable warm weather, other zoo inhabitants such as orangutans, ring-tailed lemurs, flamingos, dik-diks, meerkats, giraffes, honey badgers, Cape crows, and parrots will gradually begin to go outside.
The program of events at the Moscow Zoo contributes to the implementation of the goals and objectives of the national project in Moscow“Family”. More details about the national projects of Russia and the contribution of the capital can be found atspecial page.
The Moscow Zoo today is a dynamically developing space where scientific work is carried out, international conferences are held, educational programs are implemented, and a unique atmosphere is created daily for residents and guests of the capital to get acquainted with the amazing world of wildlife.
At the beginning of 2025, the Moscow Zoo set a world record for the number of animal species represented — 1,253 species. By 2026, the number exceeded 1,280. This outstanding result was made possible thanks to the many years of work of a team of zoologists, veterinarians, keepers, and other employees.
