The International Olympiad on Climate Change and Environmental Issues (IOCE) has concluded at the federal territory “Sirius.” The team competition was won by the teams of Russia and Pakistan. The winners and prize-winners of the intellectual contest were congratulated by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko and Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov.
“The team of Russian schoolchildren became the best among representatives of 14 countries and won the gold at the International Olympiad on Ecology and Climate Change. We are proud of the children’s achievements! We thank the teachers, mentors, and parents for their support throughout the entire process. It is important that the practical tasks of the Olympiad were aimed at studying the ecological condition of the Rosa Khutor resort area. This allows us to show the children during the competition how they can apply their skills for the benefit of Russia and its citizens. After all, as President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin notes, the topic of ecological well-being and nature conservation is one of our priorities,” said Dmitry Chernyshenko.
A total of 21 medals were contested in the individual category. The gold medal was awarded to Taisia Tretyakova, an 11th-grade student at the Lyceum “Second School” named after V.F. Ovchinnikov in Moscow.
Anna Glazkova, an 11th-grade student at Moscow School No. 1518, and Karim Tazeev, a 10th-grade student at the Multiprofile Lyceum No. 187 in Kazan (Republic of Tatarstan), received silver medals; Elima Afzalshoyeva, an 11th-grade student at the Lyceum of the National Research University Higher School of Economics (Moscow), and Zilya Galiyeva, a 10th-grade student at the School of the Center for Pedagogical Mastery (Moscow), were awarded bronze prizes.
“I congratulate our team on winning the International Olympiad on Climate Change and Environmental Issues. The students once again demonstrated a high level of preparation, a deep understanding of environmental processes, and the ability to apply their knowledge in practice. Importantly, the Olympiad became not only a serious intellectual challenge for them but also a platform for communication with peers from different countries, exchange of ideas, and experience in solving current problems. I am confident that such international experience will help students broaden their professional horizons and become an important foundation for their further development,” commented Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov.
Representatives from 14 countries participated in the competition. The Olympiad took place from September 20 to 29 and consisted of two rounds – practical and theoretical. In the practical round, held at the mountain resort “Rosa Khutor,” participants conducted a full cycle of field research: they assessed the ecological condition of the area, determined the degree of anthropogenic impact, and developed practical measures to reduce it.
In the theoretical round, schoolchildren solved cases prepared by the leading partners of “Sirius.” They explored issues of materials recycling and manufacturers’ responsibility for packaging, sought solutions for preserving plants amid climate change, and also developed concepts for protecting the bears’ feeding base.
It should be noted that this year, within the framework of IOCE, a new format was implemented for the first time. Participants acted as negotiators. They developed their own solutions to current environmental problems and presented them during a public defense.
The jury consisted of scientists and experts from Kazakhstan, Belarus, Malaysia, and Russia — representatives of national parks, scientific centers for biodiversity, climate monitoring, soil resources, geology, and radiochemistry.
Let us recall, that in 2025 at the International Olympiad, dedicatedon issues of climate change and environmental problems, Russian schoolchildren also achieved victory The country’s team took first place in the team competition. In the individual competition, the boys earned two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.
