The exhibition “Youth. Science. NSU,” dedicated to the history of the International Scientific Student Conference, opened at Novosibirsk State University as part of the MNSK-2026 event. The exhibition presents unique materials that tell about the main milestones in the history of the conference. Through them, it is possible to trace how this large-scale event expanded from a scientific student conference initially held at the all-Union level to the international level. The exhibition was organized by the staff of the NSU History Museum.Viktoriya Vybornova,Nika KovalevaиLidiya Vorobtsova. They presented photographs from different years, the initial theses of the conference, participant badges, and newspaper clippings.
—The existence of such a conference at the university itself is a phenomenon. This is a scientific student event unique in its scale, therefore the materials of MNSK require study and preservation in the museum fund. Today, the International Scientific Student Conference is the largest conference in Siberia and the second largest youth conference in the CIS in terms of attendance; it has been held annually since 1963. MNSK plays an important role in university life, being the first opportunity not only for students but also for schoolchildren to present the results of their scientific research to a wide audience. And it began with 5 sections, in which 55 speakers participated. Since 1972, it changed its name to VNSK (All-Union Scientific Student Conference), and since 1992 it acquired the status of international and became known as MNSK. Throughout its entire history and until today, MNSK remains one of the most important links in the educational and scientific process at NGU, and its significance in the university’s life is very great. Many now well-known scientists began their scientific activities by participating in such a conference: academician A.P. Derevyanko, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences L. Ershov, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences A.A. Galeev, and others., — said the senior curator of museum artifacts of the Museum of History of NSUVictoria Vybornova.
Most of the exhibition consists of photographs from MNSK sections, speeches by young researchers, conference opening ceremonies, and award presentations for winners. Many of them date back to the 1970s-80s. The black-and-white photo captures the atmosphere of conferences from half a century ago, when students and graduate students presented their reports without using multimedia equipment, demonstrating their calculations, graphs, and tables on a blackboard or large sheet of paper. The 2000s are already captured in color photographs.
On the stand are posted theses of the first scientific student conferences, starting from the second and third, as well as badges of its participants from different years.
Great interest is presented by clippings from newspapers with publications about student conferences of past years. Among them is a note about the very first scientific student conference, published in the newspaper “Za nauku v Sibiri” (1963), the authors of which were students of NGU Yu. Romanenko and A. Reposov. It told about the work of students Portnov and Romanenko, who, having won the main prize at the conference, received a free trip to Moscow and Leningrad during the student holidays.
The participation in NSK is evidenced by a publication in the newspaper “University Life” from 1999 under the headline “Even the Chinese came to the MNSK hotel.” It mentions the participation in the conference of students from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, PRC, Nepal, and France.
Participants of MNSK, students and teachers can familiarize themselves with the exhibition “Youth. Science. NGU” during the days of the conference.
