Igor Manylov, Head of the Main State Expert Review of Russia, and Yulia Chernova, Head of the Northwestern Branch of the Main State Expert Review of Russia, paid an introductory visit to Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.
Representatives of the subordinate institution of the Russian Ministry of Construction were greeted by the First Vice-Rector of SPbPU Vitaly Sergeev, Vice-Rector for Infrastructure Development and Security Stanislav Vladimirov, the university’s Scientific Secretary Dmitry Karpov, the Director of the Engineering and Construction Institute Marina Petrochenko, and Associate Professor of the Higher Engineering and Economic School Ivan Babkin.
The guests visited the History Museum of SPbPU, saw rare exhibits — items and documents evidencing the establishment of the Polytechnic, its contribution to Russian and world science. The museum director Valery Klimov spoke about outstanding alumni, talented scientists and inventors who played a crucial role in the development of the Soviet atomic project, the space industry, ensuring the country’s defense capability, and other fields.
The introduction to the university continued in the research building “Technopolis Polytech.” After examining the model of the SPbPU campus, the guests visited the Polytechnic Supercomputer Center, which has high-performance computing systems with a total peak performance of over 4.5 petaflops for efficiently solving scientific and technological problems.
Alexey Borovkov, director of the Advanced Engineering School “Digital Engineering” at SPbPU, told representatives of the Main State Expertise about the directions of the school’s research activities, emphasizing the experience of training students jointly with the industrial partner JSC TVEL.
During the visit, a presentation was also held on the scientific and production potential of the laboratories of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials, and Transport of SPbPU. The guests were shown the full cycle of creating high-tech products: from digital design and R&D to manufacturing, machining, and testing. A separate presentation was devoted to cooperation with industrial giants such as Gazprom, for whom the institute supplies unique units for gas pumping aggregates, and Rosatom.
When discussing the technology of 3D printing with metal powders, the institute’s specialists emphasized that additive manufacturing of small batches is much more efficient than traditional casting: it eliminates defects and allows achieving strength characteristics at the level of rolled products, which is critically important for power engineering.
In the Lightweight Materials Laboratory, guests were introduced to the arc 3D printing method using metal wire (WAAM). This technology is not limited by the size of the printer chamber and allows for the production of large-sized blanks or the restoration of worn parts.
The Polytechnic University is one of the leading universities that includes construction study programs, as well as a large campus with developed infrastructure. Considering this, the key topic of negotiations between the university representatives and Glavgosexpertiza was the prospects of cooperation in the training of highly qualified personnel for the construction industry, as well as collaboration in the field of engineering and new technologies.
