Bird migration in the capital region is proceeding as planned, even despite the warm autumn. In September, swallows, flycatchers, starlings, and chaffinches leave Moscow. They head south and will return to the capital only in the spring.

The green areas of the city have become nesting sites and food sources for birds. As part of the landscaping efforts, specialists are creating new parks, greening spaces by planting trees and shrubs, and tidying up water bodies. These changes transform ecosystems and benefit the birds. Rowan and hawthorn provide them with food sources, while artificial cavities offer flycatchers and starlings the opportunity to build nests. At the same time, the removal of deadwood helps maintain the sanitary condition of the areas and creates conditions for the emergence of new vegetation.

“Migratory birds are an indicator of the state of the urban environment. Swallows, flycatchers, starlings, and chaffinches return to Moscow because they find suitable conditions here for nesting and food. The landscaping of natural areas, if it takes into account the needs of birds, helps maintain this balance. We see how the feathered adapt to changes and continue to choose the capital. Their presence in spring and summer is the result of systematic work on greening the territories and their maintenance,” noted Azamat Kunafin, head of the biodiversity protection and monitoring department.

Department of Environmental Management and Protection.

The insectivores are the first to set off — swifts, cuckoos, swallows, and flycatchers. In mid-October, starlings, finches, and thrushes join them. They linger longer because they feed not only on insects but also on plant-based food. The migration season ends with waterfowl, although some birds have successfully adapted to wintering in the city.

More than 250 bird species have been recorded in the natural areas of Moscow, and about 100 of them stay here for the winter. Landscaping that takes the needs of birds into account creates conditions for migratory species to return in the spring. In addition, thoughtful maintenance of green zones helps sustain the population size and stability of migratory birds in the city.
