Since the beginning of the year, specialists from the capital’s urban utilities complex have repaired more than 47 kilometers of metal barrier fences on the roads. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Housing and Communal Services and Improvement Pyotr Biryukov.
“Repairing barrier fences is one of the important areas of work for road services. This year, more than 47 kilometers of such structures that required replacement or were damaged in accidents have already been restored. Most often, repairs were carried out on sections of ring and radial highways,” noted Petr Biryukov.
The program for replacing and repairing metal barrier fences to improve road safety has been operating in the capital since 2015.
Damaged structures are replaced with new barriers capable of stopping vehicles weighing up to nine tons traveling at 60 kilometers per hour. Such barriers help reduce the severity of accidents and prevent vehicles from crossing into oncoming traffic lanes. This helps to prevent head-on collisions.
The type of structure is chosen taking into account the road category and the permitted speed limit. Thus, tall and massive barriers up to 1.1 meters high are installed on high-speed routes, including the Moscow Ring Road. On city streets, where the speed is lower, double-tier structures are used.
Special pile-driving machines are used for the repair of barrier fences. With their help, damaged elements are dismantled, after which new structures are installed.
