Yandex ML Prize is an annual scientific and educational award from Yandex for contributions to the development of machine learning. Established in 2019 with the goal of supporting the academic community. The prize motivates researchers and educators in the fields of AI and machine learning to continue scientific and educational activities. Over 8 years, 79 teachers and scientists have become laureates of the prize.
Candidates were evaluated by the award council, which included researchers, lecturers, and leaders from Yandex, the School of Data Analysis, MIPT, and HSE University. Among the key criteria considered were the contribution to the creation and development of the course, the relevance of the program, the openness of educational materials, and the achievements of its graduates.
Taisiya Vyacheslavovna Uskova – graduate student Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of NSU, assistant at NSU MMC – became a laureate of the award in the category ‘Beginning Teachers.’ She developed an original course on data analysis, in which she abandoned traditional lectures and prioritized practice and the development of information-handling skills.
Anastasia Valeryevna Karpenko entered the top five finalists in the category “Heads of Educational Programs” as co-leader of the profile “Engineering School: Artificial Intelligence and Applied Engineering” – a specialized program launched at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics in 2019.
– I believe that the role of the teacher in the modern world is fundamentally changing. Now the main task is not just to deliver information, but to design the course so that students can find this information, absorb it, acquire new skills, and develop. This is precisely why it is necessary to experiment and search for new approaches that would allow conducting lessons most effectively. – says Taisia Uskova – a graduate student at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of NSU, assistant at the NSU Mathematics Center, laureate of the Yandex ML Prize in the category “Novice Teachers”.
