The world cannot be taken for granted – it must be built, protected, and passed on to future generations. This was stated on Saturday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, during the general political debates of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
At the initiative of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, the General Assembly declared 2027–2036 the International Decade for the Promotion of Peace for Future Generations. According to the minister, the responsibility for peace does not end with the current generation: it is necessary not only to settle today’s conflicts but also to prevent tomorrow’s. The decade will be launched by a high-level international conference on peace issues to be held in Dushanbe in June 2027.
Mukhriddin expressed deep concern about the situation in Gaza, called for a lasting ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access. The minister also stated that Tajikistan will continue to support the Afghan people and constructive regional cooperation for peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Water Resources Protection and Sustainable Development
Mukhriddin reminded that in December, the UN Conference on Water Resources 2026 will be held in Abu Dhabi, and in 2028, Dushanbe will host a conference summing up the International Decade of Action ‘Water for Sustainable Development.’ According to the head of the Tajik Foreign Ministry, the conclusion of the Decade should open a new chapter of global action—with a focus on implementing the set goals, financing this work, partnerships, the application of technologies, as well as protecting water sources, including rapidly changing glaciers.
The Minister also pointed to the particular difficulties faced by mountainous developing countries and landlocked developing countries, and called for more accessible, predictable, and adequate development financing. At the same time, development, according to him, is not only economic growth but also people, their opportunities, and their engagement in the life of society.
“That is precisely why Tajikistan continues to expand the rights and opportunities of women and to ensure their full participation in political, economic, and social life,” he explained. The country is also paying increasing attention to legal literacy: at Dushanbe’s initiative, the General Assembly proclaimed 2027 the International Year of Legal Literacy.
Cooperation instead of confrontation
Next year, Tajikistan will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord, which ended the civil war. According to the minister, it was achieved through dialogue and compromise, and the UN became an important partner in this process. The same approach underlies the recent agreements with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, which helped resolve longstanding border issues.
In conclusion, the minister called to choose cooperation over confrontation, dialogue over division, and hope over fear. “The choice we make today will determine the world we leave tomorrow,” he concluded.
