Top news of the day at the UN and worldwide: the Security Council discussed the global displacement crisis, there are now nearly 1.5 million displaced persons in Haiti, hundreds of pregnant women in Yemen lack access to medical care, and a high-level meeting on pandemics was held at the General Assembly.
Population Displacement Crisis
The number of people forced to leave their homes worldwide has exceeded 117 million, and the scale of population displacement is growing faster than solutions to overcome the crisis can be found. This was stated on Friday by Barham Salih, who spoke for the first time at a Security Council briefing as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The former president of Iraq, who was himself once a refugee, emphasized that forced displacement is not only a humanitarian issue. It is also a problem for international peace and security.
Growth in the number of displaced persons in Haiti
New data from the International Organization for Migration indicate that the crisis related to forced displacement in Haiti extends beyond the capital: the sharpest increase in the number of displaced persons is observed in areas previously considered relatively safe. In total, there are nearly 1.5 million internally displaced persons across the country. In the Artibonite department, which previously served as a refuge for families fleeing violence in other regions, the number of people who have left their homes has increased by more than 16 percent in the last three months.
Violence in Yemen
Since the beginning of August, more than 138,000 people in Yemen have been forced to leave their homes, including over 70,000 children. This is the highest number of new displacement cases in Yemen since the 2022 ceasefire agreement. Nearly 3,000 pregnant women among the displaced have limited or no access to medical care. Even before the conflict escalated, more than 2.2 million children under the age of five across Yemen suffered from acute malnutrition, and the ongoing fighting only worsens their situation.
Pandemic meeting
The pandemic high-level meeting in New York focused on pandemic preparedness. At the meeting, world leaders reaffirmed their commitment to combating future threats and cooperating in this area.
