September 27 is celebrated as World Tourism Day – a holiday for travelers and professionals working in this field. Routes to tourist sites are improving every year, in part thanks to the implementation of the national project “Infrastructure for Life.” Since the beginning of the year, more than 900 km of roads included in tourist routes have been renovated, Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin reported.
“One of the tasks set by the President of Russia is to increase the role of the tourism industry in the country’s economy and to raise the number of tourist trips to 140 million by 2030. Through the efforts of Russia’s construction complex, we develop and upgrade roads leading to popular tourist sights. These are routes to natural complexes, architectural monuments, historical landmarks, and shrines. This year, under the national project ‘Infrastructure for Life,’ 216 such facilities with a total length of 929 km have been renewed. Russia has enormous potential in the field of tourism development – each region of our country is unique. At the same time, interest is growing in areas that were not previously popular tourist destinations,” said Marat Khusnullin.
According to Rosstat, in the first six months of this year, Russians made 43.2 million trips within the country – 4.3% more than the previous year, while inbound tourism also showed positive dynamics: in the first half of the year, Russia was visited by 2.5 million foreign tourists, which is 20.1% higher than the same period last year.
“The growth of tourist flow means that we need to continue developing infrastructure. Moreover, we need to anticipate demand, otherwise popular tourist destinations will start to experience significant strain. Therefore, work on modernizing the road network becomes an important component of tourism development. By the end of 2026, under the national project ‘Infrastructure for Life,’ we will bring 1.7 thousand kilometers of regional and local roads leading to tourist sites up to standard — that’s more than 350 facilities. To make travel more convenient and comfortable, we try to provide parking spaces, observation platforms, and other necessary tourist facilities,” noted Minister of Transport Andrey Nikitin.
Special attention has been paid to updating routes to regional attractions from the very beginning of the implementation of the national project “Infrastructure for Life”.
“We are carrying out systematic work to renovate the roads leading to tourist attractions. Many sights have become more popular because there is now a good road leading to them. Just last year, under the national project ‘Infrastructure for Life’, 430 such objects in the regions were brought up to standards, with a total length of 2,200 km. Of course, we pay special attention to the quality of road works so that these routes meet the highest standards,” said Roman Novikov, head of the Federal Road Agency.
Thus, in Blagoveshchensk (Amur Region), the reconstruction of Krasnoflotskaya Street on the section from Ostrovsky Street to Teatralnaya was completed ahead of schedule. The length of the project is 1 km, and work has been ongoing since last year. The reconstruction project was implemented taking into account modern requirements for the safety and comfort of all road users.
The street is located in the “Golden Mile” district – a federal-level public and business area on the Amur embankment, where such facilities are being built as an international congress and exhibition center, a new five-star hotel, the House of Russian-Chinese Friendship, and the world’s first cross-border cable car over the Amur between Russia and China.
A section of Sovetskaya Street, which runs through the historic center of Yaroslavl, has been repaired. Tourist bus routes pass through here, and within walking distance are the Church of Elijah the Prophet, the Yaroslavl Art Museum, and other attractions. During the repairs, road workers renewed the asphalt concrete pavement, and the sidewalks and part of the roadway were paved with granite tiles that harmonize with the historical buildings.
Also, the renewal of the regional highway Yaroslavl – Lyubim continues in the Yaroslavl region. Work is underway simultaneously on five sections with a total length of 40 km. The highway leads to the village of Vyatskoye, which became the first member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages and Towns of Russia, and is also included in the preliminary UNESCO World Heritage List. There are more than 15 chamber museums in the village, which tell the story of the development of the merchant class. On the way to Vyatskoye, it is also possible to visit the Ponizovkin castle in the settlement of Krasny Profinter, the old trading village of Sereda, and then reach the smallest town in the region – Lyubim.
A large volume of road renewal works popular with tourists is underway in Dagestan. For example, in the Buynaksk district of the republic, a 9-kilometer section of the Buynaksk–Kizilyurt highway has been repaired. This is part of the route to the Sulak Canyon, famous for its grand scale, sheer cliffs, and amazing turquoise waters at the bottom of the gorge.
The major overhaul of the Buynaksk – Verkhniy Karanay route has also been completed on the section from the 7th to the 16th kilometer. The road is a popular tourist route leading to the viewpoint of the Great Sulak Canyon and the famous Karanay caves.
Overall, work on the construction, major repairs, and maintenance of road sections leading to popular tourist attractions in Dagestan is underway in seven districts of the republic. Their total length is 51.7 km.
