The State University of Management, together with the Center for Canine Support of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, implemented a joint project for conducting canine training exercises. The main goal is to train in detecting explosive devices in urban conditions to prevent potential threats.
According to the exercise conditions, mock explosive devices were placed on the territory of GUU, which the canine units were to detect in a timely manner. The dogs’ task was not only to find the suspicious object but under no circumstances to touch it, so as not to accidentally activate a possible explosive device.
Additionally, items to be found are placed in special areas. This is necessary so that the dog can practice moving and searching on difficult surfaces, for example, construction sites.
Training at the university is conducted in several stages: the first step is an inspection of the adjacent territory and the entrance, then an inspection of the presumed location of the explosive device itself is carried out, and the final stage is a search in a completely dark room.
The success of such training depends not only on the dog’s skills but also on the actions of the cynologist, who continuously guides his pet during the search and “hints” at what to pay attention to. The work is done as a team, and victories and defeats are always shared between the two.
Almost all the dogs that arrived on the first day of the exercises proved to be good trackers: the dummy explosive devices were found! However, not all the four-legged police officers managed to resist poking the dummy with their noses. Probably, that was the most interesting part of the job for them!
Unfortunately, this mistake nullified all their previous achievements.
According to a representative of the Canine Support Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, this behavior is typical for young dogs just beginning their training. Later, they outgrow these “childish” mistakes and become true professionals.
“It is no secret that calls warning of alleged explosive devices planted in buildings have become a scourge of our time. For the most part, these calls are made out of hooligan motives, but they cannot be ignored. Responsible services must always be ready to prevent and eliminate both imaginary and real threats,” said a university security service representative.
Training activities for canine units on the territory of the State University of Management lasted 8 hours. They involved 15 canine units from the Central Apparatus of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, four urban districts, as well as the Moscow Metro police.
The canine service is a vital link in the Ministry of Internal Affairs system: it provides the police with tools that technology and digital means cannot fully replace. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, tens of thousands of crimes are solved annually with the participation of service dogs – a clear indicator of their contribution to public safety.
