On September 21, a delegation from the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, the Embassy of the PRC in Russia, and the Consulate General of the PRC in Saint Petersburg visited the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. The visit took place ahead of the XXVII meeting of the Russian-Chinese Commission on Humanitarian Cooperation, which will be held on October 19 at the Research and Innovation Center “Technopolis Polytech” at SPbPU.

The selection of the Polytechnic University as the venue for one of the key intergovernmental events of the cross Years of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the field of education — the 27th session of the Russian-Chinese Commission on Humanitarian Cooperation — emphasizes the university’s special status in the system of Russian-Chinese scientific and educational dialogue. The commission session will be held under the co-chairmanship of the Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, Tatyana Golikova, and Member of the State Council of the PRC, Shen Yiqin. For the Polytechnic University, hosting an event of this caliber is not only a significant organizational responsibility but also recognition of SPbPU’s many years of work in developing partnerships with Chinese universities, research centers, and industrial companies.

The Chinese delegation included representatives of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China: Jia Peng, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges; Xu Zhezjin, Head of the Eurasian Affairs Section of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges; Shan Chuanzhizi, an officer of the Eurasian Affairs Section; Shan Zizhang, Deputy Head for Administrative Affairs of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges. The delegation of the Embassy of the PRC in Russia was led by Cao Shihai, Counselor-Minister for Education Affairs, and the delegation of the Consulate General of the PRC in Saint Petersburg was led by Consul General Luo Zhanhui.

The guests were received by the rector of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, RAS academician Andrey Rudskoy. He acquainted the delegation with the history and modern appearance of the Polytechnic, spoke about the key areas of university development, its scientific and educational infrastructure, and many years of cooperation experience with Chinese partners.

The introduction to the university began with the Main Academic Building. The delegation visited the White Hall and the Fundamental Library — spaces that vividly reflect the historical continuity, academic culture, and engineering tradition of the Polytechnic University.

Andrey Rudskoy emphasized that China holds a special place on SPbPU’s international agenda. Today, the Polytechnic collaborates with 105 universities in China, including strategic partners — Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University. More than 2,200 students and postgraduates from the PRC study at SPbPU, and cooperation with Chinese universities encompasses joint educational programs, scientific projects, academic mobility, joint laboratories, and industrial partnerships.

For the Polytechnic University, cooperation with China is not a separate area of international activity, but one of the key lines of strategic development. We are connected by strong university partnerships, joint educational programs, scientific projects, and work with industrial companies. The fact that Polytechnic will be the venue for the meeting of the Russian-Chinese Commission on Humanitarian Cooperation is perceived by us as a high level of trust and an opportunity to once again demonstrate St. Petersburg’s potential as one of the centers of Russian-Chinese scientific and educational dialogue,” noted Andrey Rudskoy.

Special attention during the visit was paid to the preparation of the venue for the upcoming commission meeting. At the Technopolis Polytech Research and Innovation Complex, the Chinese delegation inspected the spaces that will be used on October 19 and discussed organizational issues related to holding the high-level intergovernmental event.

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University is one of the gems of the Russian engineering school, a university with high status, strong traditions, and great international authority. For the Chinese side, it is especially important that the Polytechnic not only has a rich history but also actively develops modern scientific and educational projects with China. Holding the meeting of the Russian-Chinese Commission on Humanitarian Cooperation here will become an important symbol of trust and a reflection of the significant role the university plays in strengthening ties between our countries,” emphasized Jia Peng, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchange of the Ministry of Education of the PRC.

The partnership between SPbPU and China is developing not only in university spheres, but also in scientific-technological and industrial dimensions. Since 2016, the SPbPU Representative Office has been operating in Shanghai; Joint Engineering Institutes have been established in Jiangsu and Xi’an; since 2023, a Scientific and Educational Center for “Smart Materials and Intelligent Technologies” has been working in Hangzhou, created jointly with NEMTRI Co.; and at Tsinghua University, there is a laboratory of “Aerospace and Electronic Technologies.” Scientific research partnerships with Chinese corporations in telecommunications and IT are advancing. The university is also developing cooperation with the Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Cluster JITRI, which unites 120 institutes, and with industrial partners in the fields of aircraft manufacturing, automotive engineering, new materials, and energy.

The visit of the Chinese delegation was an important stage in the preparation for the October meeting of the Russian-Chinese Commission on Humanitarian Cooperation and once again emphasized the role of Polytech as one of the key platforms for Russian-Chinese scientific and educational cooperation.
