Today, more than ever, our duty is to firmly stand on the side of the United Nations, making decisions that meet our common interests, so that people around the world can freely choose their fate and their future. This was stated by French President Emmanuel Macron while speaking at the general political debates of the UN General Assembly.
“You are well aware of how committed France is to the United Nations and its ability to fulfill the obligations imposed on it by the Charter,” he said.
“I would like to reaffirm our determination to act in close cooperation with each of you to revive the multilateral approach and demonstrate: by acting together, we become stronger and more effective, better prepared to address common challenges,” Macron added, addressing the delegates of the General Assembly.
The President recalled the Franco-Mexican initiative to regulate the use of the veto right in cases of mass atrocities, emphasizing that it is “more necessary than ever” now. According to Macron, the initiative enjoys the support of 128 UN member states.
“The campaign will continue, and we aim to secure the support of every permanent member of the Security Council without exception,” the president said.
France will continue to support the Ukrainian people
Macron also expressed support for Ukraine: “France will continue to provide full support to the legitimate aspirations of the Ukrainian people for a peaceful and secure future.”
“We will do everything possible to ensure that constructive negotiations between Russia and Ukraine begin as soon as possible,” he added.
Protecting Children in the Age of AI
The president also called not to wait for the consequences of artificial intelligence use and to take measures to protect children and youth.
“Look at how chatbots affect our children. That is why we have created a coalition to protect children’s rights in the age of artificial intelligence together with Kenya, Spain, and Australia,” Macron said.
