Questions about the effectiveness of the UN and multilateral cooperation did not arise today, but the Organization has withstood the test of time, said the President of the 81st session of the General Assembly, Khalilur Rahman, opening the general political debates in New York.
“Despite everything, the United Nations has endured. Not because it is perfect, but because it is indispensable, and because it is simply impossible to imagine an alternative,” he said. According to Rahman, the UN ushered in an era of diplomacy in which states strive to solve problems through negotiations, understanding that the only alternative is weapons and bombs.
Today, the UN brings together 193 countries under one roof. Its main task since its founding has been to prevent another world war, and the fact that humanity has managed to avoid such a catastrophe has become one of the greatest achievements of the Organization. At the same time, the President of the General Assembly emphasized, the mere existence of the UN is no longer enough: people want to know if it is capable of effectively fulfilling its assigned tasks.
Even where the UN was unable to prevent conflicts, it continued to provide aid to people—from Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh to Iraq and Haiti. “These stories rarely make the headlines, but we must never lose sight of what really works,” Rahman said.
