From September 22 to October 25, for the seventh time, there is All-Russian Online Olympiad “Safe Roads”. The project helps schoolchildren review traffic rules and learn to react in unusual road situations. The Olympiad is held with the support of the national project “Infrastructure for Life.” This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.
“Child safety on the roads is one of our non-negotiable priorities. We understand that to protect a child, a comprehensive approach is needed. Under the national project ‘Infrastructure for Life,’ we are carrying out large-scale work to renovate the road network, paying special attention to routes to schools and kindergartens. But smooth asphalt cannot replace attentiveness, so we are also implementing educational projects. The All-Russian Olympiad ‘Safe Roads’ has become an effective educational tool in six years: more than 27 million participants have already tested themselves, and we see real results from this work,” said Marat Khusnullin.
The organizers of the olympiad are the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, the Ministry of Transport, and the autonomous nonprofit organization “National Priorities.”
The State Traffic Inspectorate focuses on proactive education of the younger generation. Using real traffic situations as examples, participants of the olympiad will analyze how to cross the road safely, why reflective elements are needed, how to ride a scooter or bicycle without injuries, and how to navigate road signs.
“The key task of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate is to develop stable safe behavior skills in a child even before they find themselves on the road alone. Traffic accident statistics involving children dictate our methods of work: it is not enough to simply prohibit, you need to explain. The All-Russian Olympiad allows this to be done in an interactive format. The tasks are designed so that the participant first reviews theory, studies algorithms of actions in complex situations, and only then consolidates the material with testing. This fosters awareness and helps embed the traffic rules in the schoolchildren’s memory,” noted the head of the Main Directorate for Traffic Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Police Lieutenant General Mikhail Chernikov.
Good roads also help improve road safety. Special attention is given to routes leading to educational and recreational institutions.
“The safety of children, including their journey to school, is one of the main tasks we set for ourselves. Its fulfillment begins with high-quality road infrastructure. This year, road workers are handling 3.3 thousand kilometers of school routes. These include both urban streets leading directly to educational institutions, as well as school routes—regional and intermunicipal roads—on which regular transportation of children from small settlements to schools and back is organized. Alongside renewing the road surface, we are also working on safety elements—road signs and fences, lighting, traffic lights, and markings,” emphasized Minister of Transport Andrey Nikitin.
