The innovative tram model “Lion Cub-Moscow” is operating in test mode on the routes of the Krasnopresnenskaya tram network. On route No. 10, it runs autonomously, while on other routes, it collects all necessary information, studies the area, and adapts to various road conditions under the driver’s control. After completing the required tests, the tram will regularly carry passengers on the route.

“The world’s first driverless tram with passengers was launched by the Mayor of Moscow on September 3, 2025. The innovative transport regularly runs in the northwest of the capital along route No. 10 in the Strogino district. Currently, we have five driverless trams, some of which operate as laboratories. Since its launch, the smart transport has traveled over 56 thousand kilometers, and Muscovites have made more than 150 thousand trips on it. By the end of this year, we will equip another 10 trams with driverless technologies. Thus, their total number will reach 15,” said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

Maxim Liksutov.

Passengers note that the driverless trams move just as smoothly and safely as regular ones. Many don’t even immediately realize they are in innovative transport. Inside, the interior looks familiar — the same comfortable seats, handrails, and charging ports for gadgets. The only visual difference is the inscription on the side.

The capital’s driverless trams are a unique project with no analogues. Moscow was the first in the world to launch this type of transport with passengers on regular routes. No country has a solution with this level of autonomy yet.

The innovative technology minimizes the human factor, which helps improve travel safety. Trams do not exceed speed limits, stop on their own, open and close doors, strictly follow traffic light signals, yield to pedestrians, switch tracks, and adhere precisely to the schedule.

Work on implementing unmanned technologies in the metropolitan tram network continues. Test tram laboratories run without passengers on all 11 routes of the Krasnopresnenskaya tram network to collect data. This is necessary to create a high-accuracy digital map — one of the most important stages of testing. It contains detailed information about traffic movement on a specific route.

New technologies enhance the reliability and clarity of transport operations. According to the Urban Transport Development Strategy until 2030, they will minimize deviations from the tram schedule and generally increase the speed of this type of transport.

By 2030, two-thirds of the capital’s trams will be driverless, and by 2035 — about 90 percent. The software for them was created with the participation of employees of the Moscow Government’s IT company “MTTECH.” The smart technology developed by the city is unique, operating more precisely and stably than foreign counterparts.

To find out how the capital has changed over the past years, what initiatives aimed at making city dwellers’ lives even more comfortable are currently being implemented, and what awaits Moscow and its residents in the near future, one can in a large-scale special project on the mos.ru portal, dedicated to the development of key areas of Moscow. These include transport, industry, healthcare, education, sports, and the construction sector.

Project “Transport” will be of interest to everyone who wants to learn about the main stages of development in this field, support for electric transport, and the development of the route network. In recent years, Moscow’s urban transport has become more comfortable and environmentally friendly, travel times have been significantly reduced, and infrastructure for private electric vehicles has appeared.
