Washington, April 15 /Cinehua/ — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that talks with Iran could resume in Pakistan within the next two days. Local media reported this.
“Something might happen in the next two days, and we are more inclined to go there /to Pakistan/,” D. Trump told a journalist from the New York Post.
“This is more likely, and do you know why? Because the field marshal manages his work excellently,” noted D. Trump, referring to the Commander-in-Chief of the Pakistan Armed Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who was present at the previous American-Iranian negotiations on Saturday.
In a negotiation deadlock in Pakistan, Washington proposed to suspend Iran’s nuclear activities for 20 years, and Tehran responded with an offer to suspend its nuclear program for up to five years, the New York Times reported on Monday.
Washington is not seeking a permanent ban on uranium enrichment by Iran — it is a compromise that would allow Tehran to claim that it has not given up its right to produce nuclear fuel forever in accordance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, reports the newspaper citing sources familiar with the talks.
Among other issues that could influence the course of negotiations is the restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the cessation of Iran’s support for HAMAS and Hezbollah, it says in the statement.
Earlier on Monday, D. Trump reported a call from Iranian representatives, accepted by his administration on the same day, in which the Iranian side stated that “it is very close to concluding a deal.” At the same time, the American leader signaled Washington’s own desire to reach an agreement that would end the conflict, emphasizing that the stumbling block in negotiations with Iran “is the nuclear issue,” and the priority task for the USA is the removal of all enriched uranium stocks from the Islamic Republic. –0–
