Beijing, September 20 /Xinhua/ — At the opening ceremony of the World Conference on Scientific Literacy 2026, held on Sunday in Beijing, the official establishment of the World Organization for Scientific Literacy was announced.
The new organization is reportedly aimed at promoting exchanges and cooperation, deepening joint innovations, facilitating positive interaction between science, technology, and society, so that through joint efforts the level of scientific literacy among the population is increased and the beneficial development of an intellectual society is supported.
As an international scientific and technical organization, it currently has 32 founding members from 21 countries in Asia, Europe, South America, Africa, and Oceania.
The organization was founded with the support of the China Association for Science and Technology and registered in June of this year in the Chinese capital.
As scientific and technical issues become increasingly globalized, cross-border dialogue and joint efforts in science popularization are becoming more relevant.
In recent years, China has intensified efforts to promote scientific literacy. Last year, the proportion of Chinese citizens with scientific literacy reached 16.74%, making a leap from a relatively low level to an average one.
At the same time, the country actively participates in global cooperation in the field of scientific educational activities, contributing to the enhancement of scientific literacy in economically underdeveloped regions and among key population groups.
As co-chairman of the World Federation of Scientific Workers, Elies Molins stated, scientific literacy today is more important than ever before. Only by fully informing the public about the potential and risks of technological progress can the risks associated with the emergence of new knowledge be reduced, he believes.
