At the Scientific and Technical Center of KAMAZ, the results of the competition for optimization and unification of the design of vehicle brackets were summarized.
The competition was participated in by design engineers from the Deputy General Director – Director of Development’s Unit and the Technological Center. The expert commission was headed by chief designers in the respective areas, department directors, and their deputies.
The bracket is used in the suspension (mounting of springs and stabilizers), transmission, brake and fuel systems, cooling system, as well as for fixing the cab and its frame elements. Each KAMAZ model may use its own unique brackets. Even within the same family, they may differ due to the design features of a specific modification. There are a huge number of names.
To reduce this variety, select the optimal option from the available ones, and create a universal bracket variant applicable to various KAMAZ vehicle models, it was decided to hold a competition for the optimization and unification of this part. Eleven applications were submitted for jury consideration. Seven projects advanced to the in-person stage. The contestants’ task was not only to develop a universal bracket, but also to meet requirements: reduce manufacturing labor intensity, weight, cost price, minimize welded joints, while simultaneously increasing strength and durability.
A mandatory condition of the competition was the in-person author defense of the projects. The commission took into account each participant’s contribution to the work, assessed the technical feasibility of the proposed solution, its practical significance (applicability in production, in serial assembly), as well as risks. Participants were scored on each evaluation criterion.
As a result of a thorough analysis of all proposed designs, the expert commission selected the three best brackets. First place in the competition was awarded to Egor Gusev, the chief specialist in cabin layout; second place went to the joint work of the chief specialists in air purification systems, Timur Khalimov and Vasily Tukaev. Third place was also awarded to a joint effort, carried out by Renat Gataullin, the chief specialist in exhaust gas systems, and Bulat Sitdikov, the chief specialist in engine systems modeling.
The awards were presented to the contestants by the chief designer of “KAMAZ” – NTC director Evgeny Makarov and the head of the design and research calculations department of the NTC Vladimir Karabtsev. The winner and prize-winners of the competition will also receive cash prizes.
