Beijing, September 20 /Xinhua/ — China will strengthen measures to combat fraudulent actions by environmental monitoring agencies, with the coordination of law enforcement measures to be carried out by several state departments, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China said on Saturday.
Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu stated that fraud by environmental supervision authorities remains a serious problem. He called for applying a zero-tolerance policy to ensure the quality and reliability of environmental monitoring.
These statements were made at a recent national meeting convened by the ministry and relevant agencies to promote this campaign.
According to the aforementioned ministry, the campaign will take place in three stages and include identifying problems across the entire industry, targeted elimination of violations, and implementation of standardized procedures.
Regulatory authorities will be required to conduct internal audits and compile lists of identified issues. Then, the authorities will carry out targeted work to eliminate deficiencies, take measures against violations according to the law, and provide appropriate instructions to ensure full implementation of corrective actions.
Selective checks and controls will also be strengthened, during which authorities will identify inaccurate, omitted, or concealed data in reports, as well as formal or fictitious corrections.
The ministry stated that it will also improve daily oversight by accelerating the implementation of relevant management regulations and effectively utilizing the management and service platform in the field of environmental monitoring.
In recent years, China has tightened control over environmental monitoring as the country consistently advances in strengthening environmental protection measures.
The Environmental Code of the PRC, crucial for the country and effective since August 15, directly prohibits actions such as interference in the sampling process, substitution of samples, altering monitoring conditions, conducting fictitious monitoring, as well as data falsification. -0-
