Beijing, September 18 /Xinhua/ — Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun called for joint efforts to respond to security challenges during the recently concluded 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum on Thursday.

Dun Jun made this statement during separate meetings in Beijing with representatives of the defense ministries of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Mauritania, Gabon, and Somalia, who participated in the 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum.

About 2,000 officials, scientists, and observers from more than 100 countries, regions, and international organizations gathered at the forum, which took place from Tuesday to Thursday.

Deng Jun emphasized that in the modern world, where all countries are interdependent, the deeper the cooperation between nations, the safer the world will be, promising that the Chinese armed forces are ready to contribute to the protection of international justice and impartiality, as well as global peace and stability.

“We must proceed from the interests of the security and well-being of all humanity, respect each other, strengthen exchanges and mutual learning so that the order in the field of international security develops in a more just and rational direction,” he noted.

The main topic of this year’s forum is “Consolidating consensus on stability issues, jointly promoting governance in the security sector.” This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Xiangshan Forum, which was launched in 2006.

The participants conducted in-depth discussions on a range of issues, including the trend toward a multipolar world and the international order, relations between major powers and strategic stability, maritime route security and maritime safety management, as well as risks and regulations related to the application of new technologies in the military sphere.

Many participants expressed the opinion that multilateralism, which the forum emphasizes, gives a greater number of countries a more significant role in shaping security governance while taking into account broader security issues, which corresponds to the Global Governance Initiative proposed by China in 2025.

“In the current international conditions, it is especially necessary for us to reach a consensus on stability issues, since security and stability are common aspirations of the international community,” said Li Shuyin, director of the office of the secretariat of the Beijing Xiangshan Forum.

“The Beijing Xiangshan Forum aims to resolve disagreements and promote cooperation through dialogue,” said Li Shuin, adding that the forum has become an international public good in the field of public security, provided by China and accessible to the whole world, as well as an important platform for advancing cooperation under the Global Security Initiative.
