On Thursday, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the participation of the State of Palestine in the work of its 81st session. During the vote, 152 countries voted “for”, three “against”, and four abstained.
The United States voted against the resolution. Explaining the US position, the country’s representative Tammy Bruce stated: “The US position under President Trump remains unchanged. The Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization do not fulfill the commitments they made under the Oslo Accords.”
“We will firmly insist that the Palestinian Authority and the PLO fully and unequivocally reject terrorism. This has not yet been done,” she added.
Ambassador Bruce called on the Palestinian Authority to stop “payments to terrorists and their families” and to end the “glorification of violence.”
“Promises of reforms are not yet reforms. If the Palestinian Authority wants to be treated as a partner, it must stop subsidizing terror and cease using diplomatic theater as a substitute for real state governance,” she noted.
Chinese Ambassador Sun Lei, in turn, stated that Beijing urges the host country, i.e., the United States, to “strictly comply with the relevant international legal instruments, including the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the Agreement on the UN Headquarters, and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations; properly fulfill its obligations as the host country; treat all sovereign states on an equal footing; refrain from discriminatory practices; and ensure the unhindered conduct of all activities within the framework of the high-level week of the 81st session of the General Assembly.”
Palestine’s Ambassador Riyad Mansour said that “the leadership of the State of Palestine rejects and condemns actions aimed at depriving the Palestinian delegation led by President Mahmoud Abbas of the legitimate right to participate in the work of the United Nations and in the High-Level Week of the General Assembly.”
The vote took place after the United States – the country where the UN headquarters is located – revoked visas of Palestinian officials ahead of the 81st session of the General Assembly.
