World and Security

UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday warned of a serious undermining of international law in the world, particularly highlighting the situation in the Middle East.

The danger of “lawlessness”

Speaking before journalists at the UN headquarters in New York, he stated that the rules of warfare and the use of force are increasingly being ignored, and the civilian population is bearing heavy losses. According to him, humanitarian obligations are being violated, and in some cases, even the safety guarantees for UN personnel are not observed.

“Justice must be blind,” he said. “But today, too many prefer to close their eyes to justice itself.”

Guterres emphasized that “lawlessness breeds chaos, intensifies suffering, and leads to destruction,” and called on states not to retreat from international law, but rather to reaffirm their commitment to it.

80th Anniversary of the International Court

The Secretary-General also reported that this week he will go to The Hague, where the 80th anniversary of the United Nations International Court — the main judicial body of the organization — will be celebrated. According to him, this visit should serve as a clear signal about the importance of all countries without exception abiding by international norms.

“This is a signal that the United Nations firmly supports the institutes and principles designed to protect peace, justice, sovereignty, and human dignity,” the UN chief added.

“There is no military decision”

He paid special attention to the situation in the Middle East, emphasizing that there is no military solution to the conflict. Guterres called for the resumption of negotiations, preserving the ceasefire regime and respecting freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz. “The time has come for restraint and diplomacy, not escalation,” he stated.
