The White Pagoda Temple (Baitasi), located in the Xicheng district of Beijing, was founded during the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) and is one of the oldest symbols of the capital. In recent years, with the implementation of the hutong renewal project near the Baitasi Temple, this neighborhood with nearly 800 years of history has gained new life. The area’s infrastructure and appearance have significantly improved, and it has become a popular cultural attraction in Beijing and a favored route for urban walks.
Now, an artistic atmosphere is gradually blossoming in these khutuns. In a small siheyuan (a traditional courtyard with four wings) to the west of the Baitasi Temple, a free exhibition called “Painting Exhibition in the Khutun” has opened. It features works that convey Beijing’s local color: they were created by painting enthusiasts from various professions, including children.
Especially noteworthy are almost 300 paintings on the theme of the White Pagoda – they captured it in various lighting conditions throughout the year. In addition, the exhibition features engravings from the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. This small exposition in a traditional Beijing courtyard adds a unique artistic flavor to the old hutongs.
