Beijing, September 15 /Xinhua/ — China is ready to build a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future together with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This was stated on Tuesday by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a meeting with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn.
Wan Yi, who is also a member of the CPC Central Committee Politburo, emphasized that China attaches great importance to ASEAN and considers it one of the priority directions in its diplomacy with neighboring countries.
Recalling that this year marks the fifth anniversary of the establishment of comprehensive strategic partnership relations between China and ASEAN and the 35th anniversary of the establishment of dialogue relations between them, the Chinese diplomat noted that new opportunities for the development of relations are opening up to both parties.
According to the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC, China will continue to support the cohesion of ASEAN and its central role in the regional architecture.
As Wang Yi emphasized, maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea (SCS) serves the common interests of the countries in the region. He pointed out that China is ready to work together with ASEAN countries to implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the SCS, promote consultations on the Code of Conduct in the SCS, and create a new narrative of the SCS as a sea of peace, stability, cooperation, and friendship.
Kao Kim Hourn, in turn, stated that ASEAN expects to work together with the Chinese side to seize opportunities and respond to challenges, continue deepening and expanding practical cooperation in various fields, and promote the continuous advancement of ASEAN-China relations to a new level.
The ASEAN Secretary-General added that the association is ready to jointly support peace and stability in the South China Sea together with China. –0–
