The six-meter tunnel boring machine (TBM) “Esmina” was used for tunneling the section between the “Ostrov Mechty” and “Klenovy Boulevard” stations of the Biryulyovskaya metro line. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Urban Policy and Construction. Vladimir Efimov.
“The ‘Esmina’ shield has completed boring the left running tunnel on the section from the ‘Island of Dreams’ station to the ‘Klenovyy Boulevard’ station of the future Biryulyovskaya line. It covered more than 1.6 kilometers and installed 1,118 concrete lining rings. During the operation, the complex excavated over 57 thousand cubic meters of soil. On the shield’s path was dense urban development, as well as a difficult section under the bed of the Moscow River stretching more than 200 meters,” noted Vladimir Efimov.
Reinforced concrete lining is used as the main load-bearing structure in tunnel construction. Its purpose is to securely support the underground excavation, withstand the pressure of the soil and groundwater, and also ensure the ideal tunnel geometry for track laying and installation of engineering communications. Currently, the shield is being prepared for dispatch to technical maintenance.
“The Biryulevo line of the Moscow Metro with 10 stations will improve transportation services for over one million Muscovites from eight districts of the capital. The Ruby line will run from the territory of the former ‘ZIL’ industrial zone to the Biryulevo Zapadnoye and Biryulevo Vostochnoye districts. On the section between the stations “Ostrov Mechty” and “Klenovy Boulevard,” since the start of tunneling, five on-site inspections by inspectors have taken place, including with the participation of the subordinate State Budgetary Institution “CEIIS.” Experts conducted a comprehensive set of laboratory and instrumental studies of the quality of construction materials and structures for compliance with the project documentation requirements.
The Biryulyovskaya line, over 22 kilometers long, will feature 10 stations with transfers to Moscow Central Circle, the Large Circle, Zamoskvoretskaya, and Troitskaya metro lines, as well as trains of the Paveletsky direction of the Moscow railway.
