Visitors to the Moscow Zoo, which is subordinate to the capital’s Department of Culture, there is now an opportunity to observe regular veterinary training sessions featuring a Far Eastern leopard named Miser. Since August, the predator’s exhibition enclosure hosts demonstration sessions twice a week — on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:00 PM. During the trainings, the male performs various tasks under the supervision of specialists.
The session lasts 15–20 minutes. After it ends, a zoologist or keeper comes out to the guests, answering questions and talking about the specifics of working with a rare predator. The training schedule can be found on the official zoo website in the section “Open animal feedings”.
During the training sessions, the leopard has already learned to stand on its hind legs, and now it also allows simulations of abdominal ultrasound, thigh injections, paw pad examinations, and claw trimming. Two staff members participate in the sessions — a trainer who gives commands and offers treats, and an assistant.
“Mizer allows us to examine the abdominal area, check the claws, and even take blood from the tail — this is a very complex procedure that requires the staff’s maximum concentration. Working with felines requires a special approach: the main thing is not to overload the predator and not to conduct training sessions too often. Several times a week is the optimal schedule, and it is important not to do the sessions on an empty stomach so that the leopard does not get nervous,” said Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo.
The leopard is most active in the second half of the day, as well as in the evening and twilight hours.
Mizer had trained before, but in the past year, some sessions were held in his exhibition enclosure. After the leopard adapted to working in front of the public, the training was added to the regular schedule of open feedings and supplemented with interaction with the keeper. Mizer is now 13 years old. He was born at the suburban reproduction center for rare animal species of the Moscow Zoo.
