Today marks the one-year anniversary of the multimedia installation “Matryoshka of Moscow,” which has no equivalent in the world. It tells city residents and tourists about the cultural diversity of Russia and its geography, its peoples, as well as the achievements of the capital.
“A year ago, Sergey Sobyanin announced the opening of the innovative attraction ‘Matryoshka of Moscow’ in Zaryadye Park. The art object combines digital art and a tourist center. It consists of 600 thousand parts and several intelligent control systems. During this time, we have conducted over 900 educational shows. They have been seen by several hundred thousand people from different countries,” said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.
The most innovative attraction
“Moscow Matryoshka” is the most innovative attraction of the capital. Its maximum height is 22 meters. Four powerful hydraulic cylinders are involved in the operation of the structure. More than 1,500 honeycomb-shaped media screens are installed on the attraction. Over 2,100 motors allow each part to extend up to one meter and tilt up to 45 degrees. The attraction is capable of transforming every one to two seconds.
The design was developed by Moscow engineers. It consists of a static cylinder and a retractable installation capable of taking various forms. All main components are manufactured at city factories.
“The Moscow Matryoshka” reports on important city events and also presents educational programs about Russian culture. Multimedia programs and stories are in demand among residents and visitors of the city year-round.
Over the year, five large-scale multimedia programs took place, more than 25 segments were shown for major holidays, as well as three multimedia concert shows featuring stars of the Russian pop scene.
Programs about Russia
On City Day, September 13, 2025, the ceremonial opening of the multimedia installation “Matryoshka of Moscow” took place. On that day, residents and visitors of the capital saw a special program “The Birth of the Matryoshka,” in which its creators paid special attention to the main places, digital services, and achievements of Moscow. The organizers demonstrated all the technical capabilities of the new attraction, and guests were able to listen to popular music by Russian artists.
“Russia Unites” is the first large-scale program about the Motherland. It allowed viewers to take a virtual journey across the entire country without leaving the park, and also introduced them to the cultural characteristics of various peoples. The program gathered symbols from different regions: the main landmarks of Kazan, inhabitants of the Northern Sea, the mountain peaks of the Caucasus, and the northern lights.
This year, a large-scale educational program called “Code of Russia” has been prepared for the residents and guests of the capital. It consists of 30 unique scenes dedicated to the national heritage of the country. The stories of the peoples come together to form a unified representation of the diversity of Russian culture. Viewers can watch the educational program right now—the screenings have been extended until October 1.
Fairy tales for children
Moscow artists and 3D designers pay great attention to content for a young audience. The first educational program for children was a multimedia version of Alexander Pushkin’s fairy tales, such as the famous “The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish.” For the New Year, the multimedia installation presented a plot inspired by the world-famous ballet “The Nutcracker.” To the music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky, visitors to Zaryadye Park saw, for example, scenes of the girl Masha meeting the Nutcracker, encounters with the Mouse King, the ballerina’s dance, and landscapes of the sweet city of Konfetyurinsk.
Starting from June 1, 2026, ‘Matryoshka of Moscow’ presents the captivating fairy tale ‘Matryoshka: The Secret of the Childhood Tree,’ dedicated to the history of the creation of the media object in a colorful form. The educational program shows children that the combination of talents and efforts makes it possible to achieve significant results.
Stories dedicated to city events
In addition to permanent programs, the “Matryoshka of Moscow” regularly features thematic segments dedicated to major city events. Throughout the year, special episodes have appeared on the multimedia installation for Moscow Transport Day, the birthday of the Moscow Metro, City Day, and other holidays.
Each themed plot is created from scratch by a team of artists and 3D designers and takes into account the specifics of the event. The audience is told about the history and development of urban projects, and the kinetic structure complements the visuals, turning the show into a full-fledged themed performance.

In one year at the multimedia site:
— more than 900 evening screenings have taken place using the kinetic installation;
— three large-scale multimedia concert shows featuring Russian stars have been held on stage;
— more than 25 unique programs have been demonstrated, created by a large team of artists;
— the elements of the retractable installation have performed more than 275 million movements;
— over 8.9 thousand hours of work recorded.
The innovative attraction “Matryoshka of Moscow” is located in Zaryadye Park at 6 Varvarka Street. While the daylight hours are still long, evening shows take place from Tuesday to Sunday at 7:00 PM, 8:00 PM, and 9:00 PM. On Saturdays, an additional session is scheduled at 10:00 PM.
