UN, April 13 /Xinhua/ — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for the continuation of American-Iranian negotiations, his official representative Stefan Dujarric said on Monday.

“Although no agreement was reached at the talks between the USA and Iran in Islamabad, organized by Pakistan, the discussions themselves emphasized the seriousness of the interaction and became a positive and significant step towards the resumption of dialogue,” said S. Dujarric in a statement.

“Considering deeply entrenched disagreements, an agreement cannot be reached at once, and the Secretary-General calls for the constructive continuation of negotiations to achieve an agreement,” he noted.

According to him, after several weeks of destruction and suffering, it became clear that the current conflict has no military solution.

S. Dujarric noted that at the same time it is necessary to observe the ceasefire regime, and all violations must be stopped.

The Secretary-General emphasizes that all parties to this conflict must respect freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law, he added.

Disruptions in maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz have already had a direct impact far beyond the region, leading to increased vulnerability of the global economy and instability in many sectors, an official representative noted.

According to him, disruptions in the supply of fertilizers and raw materials for its production further exacerbate the food security problem for millions of vulnerable people around the world.
