UN Development Programme Head Alexander De Croo condemned the drone strike on the protective structure of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. According to him, attacks on Ukraine’s nuclear facilities are “a game with the safety of millions of people.” De Croo is on a four-day visit to the country. He reported that over the past four years, UNDP has raised $1.3 billion to assist Ukrainians. One of the main areas of its work remains the restoration of the energy sector: thanks to the organization’s support, more than 6.5 million people have access to electricity. The UNDP chief warned that with the ongoing attacks, the upcoming winter will be extremely harsh.
Suicides
Every year, 727 thousand people worldwide die by suicide. Among people aged 15 to 29, suicide became the third leading cause of death in 2021. To draw attention to this global problem, WHO established World Suicide Prevention Day. It is observed on September 10. To protect the population and prevent suicides, WHO recommends restricting access to means of suicide, including firearms and certain medications, responsible media coverage of the topic, teaching adolescents emotional and social skills, as well as timely identification of people prone to suicide and providing them necessary support.
