In Jinhu County, Huai’an City, Jiangsu Province, a group of special education teachers is working. Over the course of 10 years, they have covered almost 80,000 kilometers, bringing education to the homes of children with severe disabilities and fulfilling the promise “Equal access to education — no student should be left unnoticed.”
In 2016, a home education program was launched at the Jinhu County Special Education School. A team of defectologist teachers embarked on a long journey covering all villages and townships of the county. Over ten years of work at assigned sites, the teachers developed an individual learning plan for each child (‘one student — one plan’), which includes literacy and general knowledge education, adaptation to everyday life, rehabilitation activities, and other components. In addition, the educators provide parents with scientifically based recommendations on upbringing.
Home schooling is not just the transfer of knowledge; it is a path to awakening the child’s soul. Thanks to the patience and professionalism of the teachers, many children have been able to go through a difficult journey: from isolation and wariness to smiles, from being unable to hold a pen to the first words “teacher.” Every step forward by the children brings immense joy to both teachers and parents.
Over the course of ten years, 8 students significantly improved their skills and successfully transitioned to schooling—they made the shift from homeschooling to in-person classes. In total, the teachers provided systematic educational and rehabilitation support to 42 children with severe disabilities.
