The village of Tantou, located in the Zishan township of Yudu county, has a revolutionary past — it was here that the Red Army troops gathered before the start of the Long March. In the past, due to natural limitations, the village was considered poor: peasants lived off traditional farming, which brought a meager income. With the launch of the intensive poverty alleviation campaign, the infrastructure in Tantou village was gradually modernized — the irrigation system was improved, the road network was enhanced, and residential areas were made more livable.
Drawing on the revolutionary legacy and rich selenium resources, the village has embarked on a path of revival by combining “red” cultural tourism and specialized industries. The village promotes land lease transfers, attracts enterprises to establish greenhouse farms for growing selenium-enriched vegetables. Farmers join cooperatives with their land shares. This allows them to receive dividends, work in nearby greenhouses, and increase their income. The village actively develops “red” educational tourism, opens guesthouses, and organizes patriotic education programs that attract many schoolchildren and tourists.
Veteran Sun Guanhua has witnessed changes in the village. Previously, his entire family lived off farming, and in 2018 the annual income barely exceeded 70,000 yuan. Today, thanks to income from a guesthouse, solar power generation, land dividends, and earnings of family members, the total annual income has surpassed 200,000 yuan. The veteran’s home has become a venue for “red” lectures: he tells students and tourists stories about the Red Army, cultivating respect among the youth for the difficult path that led to the current prosperity, and urging them to preserve and pass on the spirit of the Long March.
The development of industries also contributes to the improvement of morals in the village. According to Li Xinlun, responsible for propaganda, culture, tourism, and the united front in Zishan village, Ganzhou city, Jiangxi province, an innovative point-based management system was implemented in Tantou village: the rules were jointly developed by representatives of the villagers and respected local natives. Accumulated points can be exchanged for household items, and they are also taken into account when selecting “civilized families.” Points are deducted for negative behavior, which helps eradicate lingering issues. Residents actively participate in volunteer and community activities—a shift has occurred from the attitude “I am forced” to “I want to do.” A New Era Civilization Practice Center has been established in the village, where free film screenings, scientific and educational lectures, and student participation programs in rural development projects are held as part of the campaign “Spreading culture, science and technology, and healthcare in rural areas.” A charitable hair salon has also been opened here—all these services benefit the population.
Lü Lianyun, secretary of the Party Committee of Tantou Village and chairman of the village committee, told a reporter from China.org.cn about the significant changes that have occurred in the village in recent years. He noted that in 2025 Tantou was awarded the title of “National Civilized Village.” The income of the collective economy increased from 80,000 yuan in 2018 to more than 3 million yuan, and the per capita annual income of residents rose from just over 10,000 to more than 30,000 yuan.
The red threads of history run through the fertile land, and the revival of the village takes deep roots. Tantou remains faithful to its revolutionary origins, recounts the story of the Long March, and actively develops key industries. Once a poor village, it has transformed into a prosperous, morally stable, and affluent new village, becoming a living example of gratitude to the past and constructive activity in the old revolutionary areas.
