Professional Development for Physics and Mathematics Teachers: Visit of the Minister of Education of the Krasnoyarsk Territory

Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University of Peter the Great was visited by the Minister of Education of Krasnoyarsk Krai Tatiana Gridasova, the Director of the School of Cosmonautics Svetlana Sytnikova, and the Director of the Institute of Mathematics, Physics, and Informatics of the V. P. Astafiev Krasnoyarsk State Pedagogical University Maria Keyv.

During a working meeting, guests and the leadership of SPbPU discussed the prospects and opportunities for collaboration in the field of fundamental and engineering education of SPbPU and regional universities for the primary, secondary vocational, and higher education system of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, joint activities in school education, and the professional development of teachers of fundamental subjects. Participants noted the key role of school subjects physics and mathematics play in the technological development of the country, as well as the fact that they lay the foundations of scientific thinking, form understanding of the laws of nature and principles of modern technologies. It is difficult to imagine the development of such fields as energy, metallurgy, information technology, medicine, astronautics without them—they determine the technological sovereignty and competitiveness of the state. And at the origins of training future engineers and scientists are school teachers of physics and mathematics.

Colleagues from the Krasnoyarsk Territory shared their experience in organizing such advanced training programs with other universities across the country. They also spoke about the development of distance learning in the region and working with gifted children.

We have qualified personnel who are ready to conduct professional development courses for teachers. Undoubtedly, we plan to organize this jointly with pedagogical universities. Additionally, we are currently expanding work with talented young individuals; our goal is to help them unlock their potential,” emphasized Lyudmila Pankova, Vice-Rector for Educational Activities of SPbPU.

Special attention at the meeting was given to the organization of professional development for teachers of physics and mathematics, with an emphasis on olympiad preparation. Tatyana Gridasova noted: Currently, teachers are more focused on preparing children for the Unified State Exam (EGE), but the olympiad movement is gaining popularity, and instructors need to be ready for this. In this regard, we believe it is important to collaborate with universities that have experience in organizing and conducting school olympiads and can arrange professional development for school teachers.

Dmitry Tikhonov, Vice-Rector for Additional and Pre-University Education at SPbPU, spoke about Polytech’s experience in organizing olympiads for schoolchildren, including nationwide ones. He also shared ideas for implementing professional development programs: We are actively working on creating professional development programs for teachers. Currently, these include materials on experimental physics, a modern course on neural networks, and various partnership programs, for example, on digital drafting with “Nanosft.” Additionally, at the request of the Krasnoyarsk Krai within the framework of the “SPO Flagships” project, staff of the PISh “Digital Engineering” at SPbPU developed and launched the program “Transformation of the professional educational organization: strategy, ecosystem, technologies, and personnel.”

Subsequently, the guests were shown the simulators and trainers involved in the implementation of the “Transformation of a Vocational Educational Organization: Strategy, Ecosystem, Technologies, and Personnel” program.

Representatives of the Center for Working with Applicants presented the experience of SPbPU in organizing Olympiads, engineering classes, and specialized sessions in cooperation with regional centers for identifying and supporting talents.

In addition, the leadership of SPbPU discussed with Maria Keyv the possibilities of organizing a joint network master’s program for mathematics and physics teachers, as well as other prospects for cooperation.

After the working meeting, the guests visited the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport at SPbPU. There was a presentation of the scientific and production potential of the laboratories. The delegations demonstrated the full cycle of creating high-tech products: from digital design and R&D to manufacturing, mechanical processing, and testing. Special emphasis was placed on working with large enterprises, particularly PJSC Gazprom, for which the institute supplies unique gas compressor unit components.

Guests were shown technologies of 3D printing with metal powders (SLM). In the Lightweight Materials Laboratory, a method of arc 3D printing from metal wire (WAAM) was presented.

In conclusion of the meeting, the integration of students into the real manufacturing sector was discussed. 100% of future engineers of IMMiT undergo internships at educational and production sites, and the most talented are officially employed. Thus, the institute not only develops technologies but also prepares personnel capable of immediately working with the most complex world-class equipment.

In addition, the delegation from the Krasnoyarsk Territory inspected the model of the Polytechnic University campus, visited the television studio and the open education center. Then the guests were given a tour of the Main Building of the university. Representatives of educational organizations from the Krasnoyarsk Territory also visited the Laboratory Complex for remote completion of laboratory work in physics.

The visit concluded with a seminar with the staff of the Institute of Physics and Mathematics on the experience of SPbPU’s work with regions, including preparation for olympiads and other intellectual and project competitions. The staff of the Institute of Physics and Mathematics shared their experience in training physics teachers in the Irkutsk region using distance and computer laboratory work, the organization of popular science events, and the role and importance of videoconferencing in the educational process. Additionally, the guests were presented with methodologies for conducting classes in the olympiad school and visualization of the school physics course in engineering classes.

The parties are working on signing a strategic cooperation agreement. The institute’s director, Pavel Zakharov, emphasized the importance of passing on the experience of generations to future teachers. The main goal of our cooperation is the launch of joint educational programs. This will allow students to gain access to the best knowledge and practices of universities, and teachers to exchange experiences and significantly improve their level of teaching fundamental disciplines.
