Bush dog pups were born in the summer at the Moscow Zoo, which is subordinate to the capital Department of Culture.

Now the little ones are already going for walks together with the other family members. In warm weather, they can be seen in the enclosure on the old territory, and when it gets cold, they move to the warm indoor houses.

“All members of the group began to show care for the mother during the birth. Some of the bush dogs helped to lick the female, as they do in the wild. Another part of the pack carried the puppies in their mouths, hiding them in the numerous burrows within the spacious three-section enclosure territory. The puppies are born blind and deaf, smaller than a palm, with a dark brown or even black coat. After a couple of weeks, their eyes open, and as they grow, the puppies acquire a lighter, reddish shade,” shared Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo.

The puppies are currently being fed with their mother’s milk. At the age of eight and 12 weeks, the young ones will undergo scheduled vaccinations. During the examination at that time, specialists will also be able to determine their sex.

Bush dogs are social animals. In the wild, they live in a large friendly pack, share responsibilities among all members, and hunt together.

These animals inhabit the forests and humid savannas of Central and South America, preferring to live near water. The cute brown animals with rather plump sides are serious predators. The large family of bush dogs can even hunt large snakes, capybaras, and caimans. Their closest relative in the family is the maned wolf.

The Moscow Zoo houses the largest group of African wild dogs in Russia. They have been living here since 2018: that year, a young male named Witsli-Putsli was brought to the capital from the Novosibirsk Zoo, and shortly after, a young female named Freya joined him. The couple’s first offspring appeared in 2019. Currently, the pack includes 24 individuals of this species, including three newborns.

The Moscow Zoo is a rapidly developing space. Scientific activities are carried out here, international conferences are held, and educational projects are implemented. The organization creates unique opportunities for residents and visitors of the capital to get acquainted with the world of wildlife.

At the beginning of 2025, the Moscow Zoo set a world record for the number of animal species presented. It housed 1,253 species. By 2026, their number had approached 1,280. This result was made possible by the many years of work of the entire team, including zoologists, veterinarians, keepers, and other specialists.

On the portal mos.ru appeared large-scale special project, dedicated to the development of key sectors of Moscow. These include transport, industry, healthcare, education, sports, and construction. The special project helps to learn how the capital has changed over recent years, what initiatives aimed at making residents’ lives even more comfortable are currently being implemented, and what awaits Moscow and its inhabitants in the near future.
