Washington, April 14 /Xin Hua/ — U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio will hold a meeting with the ambassadors of Israel and Lebanon in Washington on Tuesday. This was reported by the American portal Axios.

It is expected that at the meeting, which will become the first direct contact at the highest level between Israel and Lebanon since 1993, the main focus will be on the possibility of a ceasefire, long-term disarmament of the Iran-backed group Hezbollah, and the prospect of a peace agreement between the two countries, according to the statement.

“Israel is at war with Hezbollah, not with Lebanon, so there is no reason for the two neighbors to engage in negotiations,” M. Rubiyo stated.

Israel and Lebanon have expressed different expectations ahead of upcoming negotiations in Washington. Israel insists on the disarmament of “Hezbollah” and a peace agreement, while Lebanon advocates for direct talks and a ceasefire.

Intense fighting continued on Monday between Hezbollah and the Israeli army in the border town of Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon, reports the country’s national news agency. –0–
