In September 2026, a new master’s program “Distributed Systems” (field 09.04.01 “Computer Science and Computing Technology”) started at the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) of NSU. The first master’s students of this unique R&D direction numbered 29 people.
This is the only such program beyond the Urals and one of the few in Russia that has successfully integrated deep fundamental science with applied development. Graduates will learn to manage the most complex IT infrastructure, which today supports cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and big data processing services.
— Currently, all major IT companies work with distributed systems, as they are the foundation of artificial intelligence, big data processing, and the operation of cloud platforms. At the same time, there are very few specialized professionals in our country, and most universities cover this topic only superficially, in the format of individual courses., — said the dean of the FIT NSU, corresponding member of the RAS Mikhail Lavrentyev.
The idea of creating a new educational program has been discussed at NSU for a long time. This is a very science-intensive and resource-intensive program, the implementation of which requires not only forming a new set of courses but also providing the infrastructure and significant computing power.
— We have been developing the idea for this master’s program for several years. It fundamentally differs from our other master’s programs in its set of disciplines and the infrastructure that will be used for its implementation. Usually, the architecture of our master’s programs is built around a core base, and then specialization is formed through elective courses. However, the new program is an exception: we did not borrow a single discipline from existing ones. The entire set of disciplines was designed completely from scratch, tailored to the specific objectives of the field., — explained Mikhail Lavrentyev.
Classes are taught by top-level experts. FIT NSU has assembled a unique teaching staff: strong theoretical scientists and top engineers from the IT industry who work every day with real high-load systems (HighLoad). The first intake for the FIT program has already taken place: two groups of 14-15 people each have been formed, and many of the admitted are graduates of bachelor’s programs from other faculties, including other universities. As emphasized by the dean of FIT, this year, despite the increased intake, there was heightened interest both in this program and in the faculty’s master’s programs overall, so the competition was quite intense compared to previous years.
Graduates of the new program will be able to build careers in the country’s largest technology, financial, and raw materials companies, such as Yandex, VK, Sber, T-Bank, MTS, Gazprom Neft, and others.
