Moscow, April 13 /Xinhua/ — Russia responds to Western attempts to block its fleet by political, diplomatic, and other means. This was stated in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta by the assistant to the President of Russia, Chairman of the RF Naval Board Nikolai Patrushev.
“In response to the West’s attempts to block maritime communications, which are indispensable for Russia to carry out foreign trade operations, our country is applying political-diplomatic and other measures,” N. Patrushev pointed out.
He noted that after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision to grant the British armed forces powers to seize Russian merchant ships, statements from Moscow followed about the unacceptability of such actions. “However, considering that London prefers to interpret international law in its own favor, last week the escort of tankers carrying Russian oil across the English Channel was carried out by a Black Sea Fleet frigate,” explained the assistant to the Russian president.
According to him, measures providing for the possibility of escorting the merchant fleet by warships of the navy were developed at the meeting of the Naval Collegium.
“In case of emergency, other measures will be taken to ensure the safety of navigation and the protection of national interests in international waters,” emphasized N. Patrushev.
