Ashgabat, April 13 /Synghua/ — Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty (People’s Council) of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stated the categorical inadmissibility of military actions in the Caspian region. This was reported on Monday by the Turkmen International Information Center.
In his statement, G. Berdymukhamedov drew attention to the status of the Caspian region as a “zone of exclusive peace and stability” and noted that any military clashes in this “strategically important region are absolutely unacceptable and contradict the multi-year efforts of the coastal states to strengthen security.”
“The foundation of regional stability remains the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, signed in 2018… This historical document directly prohibits the presence of armed forces from non-regional states and any military activity of countries that have no access to the Caspian Sea,” G. Berdymamedov reminded.
Particular concern for him was caused by the facts of military strikes on the territory of a neighboring Caspian state. It was stated that Turkmenistan fully rejects such actions, considering them destabilizing and dangerous for the entire regional security architecture.
“The fundamental position of Ashgabat remains unchanged: preserving the peaceful status of the Caspian Sea basin is a priority that is not subject to revision,” emphasized Chairman Halk Maslahat.
G. Berdymukhamedov also announced that Turkmenistan is studying a project for a joint statement of the Caspian states. The main purpose of the document is to prevent the transfer of armed conflict from the Middle East to the Caspian region, which could lead to a sharp escalation of tension.
