Today the capital of Russia celebrates its 879th anniversary. Moscow is not just a city, it is the heart of our country. Its rhythm is captivating, and the beauty of its streets enchants millions of visitors every year.
Moscow is recognized as the best city by various criteria not only by Russians but also by global rankings. Every year, the capital becomes more beautiful, improves, and renews itself, delighting us with its beauty and comfort.
The first holiday
For the first time, Moscow’s birthday was celebrated in 1847 in honor of the 700th anniversary of the first chronicled mention of the city. The idea for the holiday was proposed by historians and publicists Mikhail Pogodin and Konstantin Aksakov. At that time, solemn prayers were held in Moscow’s churches, and festive illumination decorated the Kremlin, Moscow University, the monument to Minin and Pozharsky, the Novodevichy Convent, and other iconic city landmarks.
800th anniversary of Moscow
The next major celebration took place a hundred years later, in 1947, when Moscow marked its 800th anniversary. The idea was personally approved by Joseph Stalin, and the capital was decorated with lights, orchestras performed on the streets, there were public festivities, and the celebration ended with a grand fireworks display.
A commemorative medal was established for the anniversary, a monument to Yuri Dolgoruky was erected, and new cultural sites were opened.
How the holiday became annual
The tradition of celebrating Moscow City Day was revived in the 1980s: concerts, fairs, theatrical performances, and parades were held on the streets. And after the grand 850th anniversary of the capital in 1997, City Day became an annual holiday.
