Seven years ago, an unusual walking route opened on the territory of the country’s main exhibition, allowing visitors to see VDNH from an unprecedented perspective. The eco-trail is located in an amazing place — a unique broad-leaved forest — but it is situated at the level of the tree crowns and allows visitors to see the natural and park landscape from above.
On an area of 10 hectares grow valuable tree species such as pedunculate oak, larch, pine, Manchurian walnut, and others. The average age of the oaks is 150 years, but there are also specimens that are 200 years old. The Sheremetev Oak Grove has the status of a federal cultural heritage site. It is currently part of the VDNKh landscape park “Wild Nature”, and in the 18th–19th centuries belonged to the Sheremetev estates.
These days, 6,600 square meters of the road and trail network have been restored on this territory according to the historical layout. The aerial eco-path, situated at a height of 6.5 meters, consists of multiple spans with railings curved along the path of movement, supported by twisted metal supports. The total length of the structure is 474 meters.
Climbing to the top, you can spot squirrels and birds in the tree branches. If you’re lucky, a gray owl, black woodpecker, kestrel, and even the rare Red Book-listed hobby may appear before guests. You can take a walk along the aerial eco-trail at any time. In the evening, the lighting is turned on here.
VDNH reminds that you need to behave carefully and quietly on the eco-trail so as not to scare away animals and birds; you should also treat the surrounding plants with care. Information about the natural objects nearby can be found on special informational signs installed along the entire route.
The author of the eco-trail and park project is French landscape architect Michel Pena. He worked on their implementation from 2017 to 2019: dividing the territory into thematic zones and creating a visual embodiment for each of them. Over all these years, the trail has been very popular: more than six million people have walked along it.
Visitors to the exhibition can explore another amazing route created by Michel Pena — the “Mobius Strip.” This landscape attraction is a continuous path shaped like the infinity symbol. Those walking along the “Mobius Strip” enjoy views of the cascade of Kamenskiye Ponds and the historic pavilions of VDNH. Since its opening in 2023, more than 2.5 million people have traveled this route.
After visiting the eco-trail and the “Möbius Strip,” you can relax near the Kamensky ponds, and then enjoy the colors of an autumn day in Ostankino Park.
VDNH is a unique public space with an 87-year history. It encompasses 49 cultural heritage sites, including historic pavilions, fountains, and separate green zones with valuable plants. The total exhibition area exceeds 325 hectares. In total, more than 300 species of flowers and over 100 species of trees and shrubs are represented on the VDNH territory.
